This was my second stay at The Rock (the first being in 2010). I returned because there's something engaging about the place - something that is familiar, safe and comforting. Is it perfect? No? But it is special. A shadow of a bygone era that I hope will remain as a part of Gibraltar as the apes.
There are plenty of reviews that cover what The Rock is lacking (on-trend decor & furniture - and in need of a bit of a general spruce up) - I want to compliment The Rock for its exemplary staff and comment on its benefits. Every staff member I encountered was courteous and professional. Very helpful in organising private hire taxis and other knowledge. The rooms are generously sized with fantastic big beds, a fridge, TV, large wardrobes and other storage areas, trouser press, hair dryer, balconies and big modern bathrooms.
Housekeeping did a great job, always a good selection of complimentary hot drinks and biscuits, and plenty of bath towels.
There are lots of areas to sit and take in the stunning views of the bay and on a clear day you can see Africa whist sitting sipping a drink in the bar or on your balcony.
The Wisteria Terrace was a lovely as I remembered. A real pleasure to spend time there. Great views and a great atmosphere. The bar staff were really great. Make sure you check out all the history...This was my second stay at The Rock (the first being in 2010). Breakfast is amazing. An incredibly wide range of hot and cold items. One of the best buffet breakfasts I've had in Europe.
Wifi is free to use in the public areas, but not available in the rooms which is my only minor complaint. But at least they don't charge where you can access it which is really refreshing and a nice touch.
I've heard alot about the supposed renovations that keep getting pushed back. I welcome them if they do but it certainly would not put me off staying here if they don't.
As long as the owners retain the charm and sense of history that makes this hotel such an icon then I'll be happy.
To sum things up - I would highly recommend this hotel. If you come looking to pick holes and find faults, you'll certainly find them. But if you come expecting to stay in an historic survivor of a hotel, a grand dame of Mediterranean hotels, then you most certainly will not be disappointed.
I cannot wait to stay here again!
Ps - the new Gibraltar International Airport is amazing. Very very impressed!
