Stayed here from 20 to 23 Feb 2013, excellent stay staff very helpful, had to move rooms as no wi-fi in first room, apart from that really enjoyable 3 day break, invasion of monkeys but you can put up with them, great food & service, reception staff very helpful. The only thing I can say is that the outside needs a paint job & the balconies/terraces could do with a good was down, but otherwise extremely nice place to stay, very old world style.

Room Tip: All rooms have a great sea view

It is dated but that can be good, large lounge area with great views, gardens, baths in rooms. A relaxing experience. It does have free wi-fi that worked in the bedrooms and an internet room. There is a steep walk from the town, however the blue bus stops outside. It is £1.50 for a hoppa day ticket, 80p if OAP, these can be bought on the bus and are valid for all city buses. It would be useful to have copies of the timetables available at reception.

Stayed here on BA short break from the UK for some winter sun.
Hotel is nicely situated - a little out of the town but easily walkable - stunning views across the harbour, especially at sunset (all rooms face the sea apparently).
Room was ok - nice size. A little shabby maybe but not dirty. No minbar, but we bought locally & stored in the now empty fridge. Supply of hot water a little slow.
Signs on the balcony warning about not feeding the apes - one appeared on the balcony a few times but only tried to get in once - shooed it away.
Staff on reception were great, friendly & professional. Breakfast was ok - nice choice of food obviously aimed (a little) at UK visitors, of which there were a fair amount.
Also seemed a popular choice for business, which appeared to be encouraged by the management.
There are signs around saying that refurbishments are planned in; it certainly needs some, especially in the restaurant (see separate review) which is getting a bit shabby now. This could be a really nice hotel, given the views & location.
Best bit ? nice glass of wine on the balcony watching the ships in the harbour; great views across the harbour to Spain & across the Straits to Morocco.

Room Tip: Probaly have a room on a higher floor to maximise the views.

Dear Chrishel, Thank you for your well-balanced review. We are indeed refurbishing the hotel and this will be a total 'top to bottom' exercise. I hope that we can welcome you back in due course and you can experience the fruits of our investment. Your comments about our reception team were particularly pleasing. Thank you once more.

Thoroughly enjoyed a memorable week stay. Stunning views over the bay to Spain and across the straights to Africa.

A warm welcome and superb administration at check-in and out. Generally nothing too much trouble throughout the establishment, although perhaps a few of the ‘more mature’ staff slightly ‘trapped’ in a ‘time warp!’ and could benefit with a more positive can do attitude. That said, it fitted very well with the ambience!

Extremely impressed with the quality and pricing of food and drinks in both the restaurant and the Barbary Bar. Also an extensive choice for breakfast with both full English and Continental fare available.

Previous contributors have already commented at length on the forthcoming refurbishment which is definitely about to start. I do hope that The Rock does not loose its true’ Britishness’ as a result of it. A much needed landscaping of the outdoor areas is, I hope also part of the refurbishment as the potential would be stunning.

A very desirable British outpost!

Dear Wogglescout, Thank you for your critique. I was delighted to read that you enjoyed your week with us. We certainly plan to retain the'feel' of the hotel after our refurbishment and the landscaping of exterior areas of which you speak will definitely be in evidence. Thank you.

I would like to thank the Manager and his staff for the excellent manner the heating problem was dealt with during my last visit to the Rock Hotel. My Wife & I have stayed in the Rock Hotel many times over the past ten years and always found the staff friendly and helpful. I was expecting to be suppled with replacement heating or another room but to be offered dinner on the house for the inconvience was a really unexpected and a nice gesture.Thank you. See you again in November.

DearTerry L, I was glad to read that we reconciled your heating problem in a professional manner and the gesture of dinner was the least we could do given the circumstances and the fact that you were a long standing and loyal customer. Here's to your next visit. Thanks once more.

Just got back from a 3 day stay at the Rock. Friendly, welcoming, great service, wonderful views. Kids loved the Apes, a fun experience. Excellent food. Bar and Restaurant staff very friendly and as most of them have been at the hotel for 20 years or more, have a wealth of information and recommendations to make on your stay in Gibraltar. Had a great trip up the Rock in a guided mini-bus, a must if you have children. The Apes made the holiday for my children. The caves and natural park were well worth a visit. Can highly recommend the hotel for family gatherings or quiet weekends away. If you are staying in Gibraltar, the Rock is the only place to stay!

Dear Dermot20, Thank you for taking the time to offer up such a pleasant review, not just of the hotel, but also Gibraltar as a family destination. Let's hope that 3 days simply wasn't enough time and that we can look forward to you all returning in due course! Thanks again.

As some of the other reviews say, this is definitely not the most up to date hotel in the world, but that is the point...it is absolutely the perfect way to spend time in Gibraltar ...restful and relaxing.
Plenty of people stay here for business too, that much is evident, but we have only ever stayed for some r and r. The bedrooms are large enough ...the beds are massive and comfortable...the food in the bar and restaurant are excellent...and there is nothing nicer than sitting on the wisteria terrace when the sun is going down...beautiful and warm. Depending on your level of fitness, it is easily possible to walk into town and even onto the quay area and back in a morning/ afternoon/ evening, but there are also regular buses that stop outside the hotel and taxis. All the rooms face towards the sea with balconies, and the rock apes come down to visit. As long as you don;t try and feed them or allow them into your room, they will sit and 'talk' to you, and 'pose' for pictures to be taken. All in all the Rock Hotel is a wonderful place to visit, and Gibraltar also just a very relaxed and pleasant place to visit, with such (genuinely) friendly people.

Room Tip: All rooms face towards the sea with a balcony so don't worry too much about choosing a room. Bed...
