“2 words, Fab ulous!!!”

Adrian and Kathy had wonderfully tasting fresh food served to them by Richard, the Best Host in Gibraltar. An ex Jeweler by trade he now serves "Gold" Standard dishes in a relaxed, friendly and welcoming enviroment. The Tempura vegetables were to die for and the Huevos al Flamenca was a dish for the gods. And the Cheesecake, i would leave my wife for. Luckily kathy is still my Fiance so she doesn't have to worry. His passion for food is unbridled and his knowledge of ingredients is second to none. Personally i think he owns all the Jewelry Shops in Gibraltar and he opened the Bistro just as a hobby because he loves food! The staff he employs deserve rich praise for there welcoming, friendly but professional approach. A joy and a pleasure. I'm counting the days until we return. See you Soon Richard..Best wishes from Adrian and kathy

“Still as good a little gem on Main Street”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

We visited again in June 2013 having been there in Jan 2012 (reviewed then too) as we were not disappointed - this is a great find and totally different to most of the outlets on Main Street and the marina. It is meeting place for locals which is good and the owner knows his food all organically sought and freshly prepared with a wide range, the mains are excellent as are the pasties and pies and with good coffee too.

The service is welcoming and efficient and it's good value too, what more is there to say - oh yes it's still child friendly. All in all not to be missed.

“Worth the wait”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

Richard Clark, is the chef patron of this small bistro in the centre of Gibraltar’s Main Street. Due to the narrowness of its frontage there is only room for three tables on the pavement. It is a convenient meeting place to find out to what is going on in Gibraltar. Many prominent local politicians take their morning coffee in this bistro.

Do not be put off by the full house sitting on the outside tables as there is room inside where you can sample some of the best food on the Rock. Richard is helped with the cooking by an outstanding chef and so is able to take time off from cooking and talk about food to those about to select their meals from the menu. He is one of Gibraltar’s foremost ‘foodies’ and is able to describe and tell where the ingredients for each dish have originated. For example all meat and game is either free range or wild. 30% of all food is organic and 40%, which includes fruit and vegetables, is natural. Customers have the choice of either free range or halal chicken; the latter ensures that care is taken on all feeds and not derived from any animal and that there have been no injecting the meat. The pork is from chestnut fed, free range pork from Galicia as is the free range beef. The lamb is sourced from the Granada national park.

Richard is also a wine expert and after much tasting chose for the house wines , a red Rioja reserva and a dry but fruity white from a bodega in Huelva. This is reasonably priced at £ 13 a bottle.

During the recent Gibraltar Literary Festival Donald Sloan, the founder of Oxford Gastronomica , took Madhur Jaffrey, Hardip Singh Kohli and Jessica Harris for a meal. Two days later it was reported that this was one of the best meals they had enjoyed on the Rock.

The service is somewhat slow but the quartet of Richard, the chef and the two assistant managers, Avelina and Paul keep all the customers fully entertained. If you want freshly cooked food then waiting for a few minutes is a small price to pay. If you are in a hurry then go for the Cornish pasties and the pies – mushroom, spinach and beef. ; these can be taken away or eaten in the restaurant. In addition the pies can be served with fresh chips and a side salad.

My guest enjoyed the huge portion of chicken tagine whilst I devoured a roasted gammon loin of pork with lemon & olive oil mash potatoes and sautéed vegetables.

The puddings are home cooked and are incredible. My guest had never tasted a better cheesecake which I settled for a large portion of a chocolate cream cake. Both served with double cream.

The Illy coffee is excellent but the cups could be bigger.

All in all, despite the wait. this was a culinary experience to savour and it will be remembered.

“Refreshingly different”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

The owner is a complete foodie and will tell you at length about where he sources his ingredients from. This passion for food comes to fruition in the final product. They say the proof is in the pudding, but at Madeleine's the proof is an all three courses. This is a refreshing gem amongst all the pub grub serving spots in Gibraltar. I'll certainly be back!
