“Disappointing lack of care and service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2012

The reason why this place gets two balls is the location. Very central, yet very quiet. There is also some nice details in how the old convent is present, in details of the interior as you walk from the entrance to the reception, for instance. Unfortunately, otherwise it felt really lousy and stingy. One thing is the structural elements:The very small double room we had for three nights had a reading light and bedside table only for one side of the bed. What is that? There was a cupboard with four hangers. For two people... No desk or table in the room, but an iron rack of shelves (for storing what??? I did not get it) and a suitcase stand of iron in front of the window. Feels like sleeping in a spare room where some disused pieces of furniture are stored. Our towels were not replaced, the two plastic glasses we received on the first day were thought to last for three days apparently. The ventilation in the bathroom did not function. Sorry about this, Santiago is beautiful, but some care and comfort should be provided for the price paid at this hotel/convent.

We stayed here for 4 nights and enjoyed the monastic experience with no TV, phone, and wi-fi only though the cafeteria on the main floor. Small rooms and bathrooms but sufficient for sleeping and daily showers. €5 breakfast was just so-so, but hey its 5 euro! GREAT location...right across from the breathtaking cathedral and only a 5 minute trek from the main alleyways where all the restaurants are. There's a great little courtyard in the middle of the monastery turned hotel that is very serene and a great way to reflect on the magic of Santiago de Compostela. Loved the experience and "roughing it" a bit! I LOVED this city!!

I stayed at this hotel several times over 3 weeks in May 2012. The staff were most pleasant and helpful, the rooms reflected the monastic origins of the hotel, and were very clean and comfortable, with a modern en suite. Its location near the Cathedral is ideal for pilgrims, and there are many eateries nearby. There are also dormitories for pilgrims on the fourth floor, but I haven't seen this accommodation. Breakfast was available for 5 euros, and included juices, fresh friuit, yoghurt, cheeses, meats, cakes, cereals, toast and a variety of breads, plus tea and coffee...very good value..pilgrims have hearty appetites!

This hostel clearly has pilgrims in mind. It's less than a minute's walk from the Praza do Obradoiro where the world renowned Santiago de Compostela Cathedral stands. In the heart (quite literally) of this city's historic centre, you can't ask for a better location.

The building itself is incredibly historical too (inside and out). We weren't pilgrims but we appreciated the basic bedrooms, with fantastic views, antique shutters with a modern hot shower.

We stayed for one night (I wouldn't envisage staying here more than a few days as the rooms are small and basic - definitely not luxurious). Prices were high because it was late June, around the time of Santiago's fiestas, it's summer, there was a Bjork concert on and there are always pilgrims in this town!

I would recommend people looking for a central spot in Santiago de Compostela, for a few nights, to stay here. If you plan to be out for most of the day and want a pied a terre to sleep and shower in, this is the hostel for you.

Room Tip: One tip - state specifically you want a double or twin bedroom when booking because you don't ne...

We were delighted with our stay! The rooms were spartan but quite comfortable, providing all we needed. The beds were very comfortable, the bathroom small but perfectly fine (with a great shower!), the windows opening onto a very quiet passageway. The location, directly next to the cathedral, was perfect for visiting historic sites AND for dining. Internet was available in the lounge on each floor, and unavailable in the rooms themselves, a minor inconvenience. We loved the historic character of the building and would definitely recommend it to friends, and ourselves return if we are ever in Galicia in the future.

This hotel is a wonderful finish to a long walk on the camino. We really enjoyed the calm and welcoming athmosphere. We walked from Tui to Santiago and looked forward to our stay in the Hospederia. It is in a wonderful setting opposite the cathedral and central to everything. The rooms are basic and very clean. The food is fresh and plenty of it.I had a small problem with my passport and the staff were so helpful in sorting it out. This is a place i hope to return to soon on our next stage of the camino.

Thr rooms are spotlessly clean with new towels every day. Previously a monastery so the rooms are small but adequate apart from hangers. No air conditioning but the stone walls are so thick the room stayed cool. Only a couple of minutes from the main cathedral square so location perfect. Can be a bit noisy as the sound travels on the stone floors. The hotel restaurant does a good basic 3 course lunch with a full bottle of wine for 2 people for 12 Euros/person although many bars and restaurants withinn 5mins walk. Lovely courtyard, just a shame there isn't a nicer seating area. The lounge is also very functional and could do with more comfy chairs. Despite this we thought it was great value for money and loved the historic feel to the building and the location and the fact that the taxi rank is just round the corner and journeys are very cheap. Don't miss the famous incense burner at the end of mass in the cathedral and book a walk on the cathedral roof as well as visiting the museum.
