“Nice Place. Great location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2013

Location, location, location. Right on a little plaza within walking distance of all the sights.
Tarragona has a rich history and a wonderful archeological museum.
Room was a little cramped. Couldn't get WiFi in room.
It was a bit hard to find and our GPS tried to drive us through an ancient Roman wall! Be sure and have good directions.

Not what we expected at all. The room was nice with a balcony overlooking the square - which the hotel shows photos of with restaurants and bars and a nice place to eat out in the evening. What we got was all the chairs/tables cleared away and a huge sound stage erected at one end of the square. All evening - and until 3am - loud music boomed out - shaking the hotel walls - with the plaza converted to a giant bar serving alcohol to young people partying to the music below. The whole room shook. We had no idea that a festival was taking place and feel the hotel should warn guests who might not want to be stuck in such a situation. The staff weren't particularly helpful - there is a parking discount but they don't offer it - we found out about in on tripadvisor and had to ask for it. The internet is patchy - it is basically a domestic modem under the desk in reception and has a very limited range. Very disappointing experience.

We picked this hotel on the basis of other reviews and weren't disappointed. The location is great and although the party in the square seems to go on all night (we were there on a Friday and Saturday and the Festival of St Tecla was starting, so maybe it was busier than usual) the room was sufficiently soundproofed to get off to sleep - the beds seemed perfectly comfortable.
We got a room overlooking the square and were able to sit on the balcony and watch when the square became the focus of the Festival. At one stage a succession of people in dragon suits stopped and danced around whilst fireworks were set off from their costumes - the people of Tarragona really know how to celebrate! This would be a terrific place to spend Christmas.
We mainly ate in the cafe/restaurant attached to the hotel which does excellent value 3 course meals, including wine, for 12 euros! The waiters were really friendly and helpful and the food is great.

Room Tip: Get one overlooking the square to really feel part of what's going on

One of the few hotels actually in the old town, all the sights are on the doorstep. It's set overlooking a large square where, at peak time, there must be 1000 people eating and drinking, but if you get a room overlooking the square the double-glazing effectively blocks the street noise and it's a great view for people watchers. Room not huge, but adequate, and very clean, as was the bathroom - good shower that doesn't run hot or cold when someone else turns a tap on. Air con effective, but keep bathroom door closed as the bathroom window has no curtain (it's obscured glass) and gets very warm.

Decent breakfasts on the terrace priced between €2-€4 ish.

Staff brilliant; there are no key-cards, but a night porter will let you in at any time - which means no-one can accidentally leave the front door open on such a busy square. Special thanks to Luis who saved my airport transfer after the taxi company gave the driver a schedule for pick-up at 3.15, when it was actually for 4.00. When he told me that the taxi had been and gone because I wasn't here, I showed him my email confirmation and he called them up and got them to come back for me. Fortunately there was very little traffic on a Sunday afternoon so I made the flight.

Room Tip: Pay the little extra for a room overlooking the square. It's worth it.

We choose this site based on recent reviews and overall were delighted with the location - close to the historic part of the city and easy to walk to most attractions! Friendly staff and modern interior which was quiet pleasant. However, the beds were extremely hard and uncomfortable and the aircon did not work! The hotel sits above a busy bar / restaurant area and therefore there is lots of noise until the early hours and then all of the supply trucks arrive early morning, so little chance of a good nights sleep.

Room Tip: On arrival insist on a room where the aircon is working as you will not be able to open the windows...

Basic hotel, doesn't do it justice. Clean tidy Air conditioning lift. It is set in the middle of a closed pedestrian square with plenty of restaurants; near cathedral and Roman forum. Near 'ampitheatre, worth visiting, and short walk to great beach. short walk to markets and other vibrant part of the old town. 30 euro taxi ride from airport. No real restaurant, but plenty right beside the hotel.
Can really recommend this venue

Room Tip: pay the little extra for square view.

First some problems (but this review will get positive pretty soon!): the room was quite small and the view (we were non square facing at the cheaper rate) was of a back alley and some scaffolding. Three of the four major national Spanish channels (the equivalent of BBC1, BBC2 and ITV) were missing from the TV and had been replaced by fortune telling premium phoneline channels, which was bizarre and disappointing as we enjoy watching Spanish TV when we are in Spain and even for English speakers, these are the channels where you are most likely to find something familiar to watch. Finally the air con only worked for four hours at a time so if we went to sleep with it on we would wake up sweating and have to get up and reset it.

However these were our only complaints. The room was not only cleaned and made up perfectly every day by very friendly cleaning staff but our things were tidied up! The staff were very friendly and helpful at all times.

The hotel is located right in one of the most busy and happening squares in Tarragona, with the imposing Ayuntamiento (town hall) at one end. It's a beautiful square, entirely pedestrianised, and the whole square is packed with restaurants with large terraces extending across the square. The square is packed with visitors, including families and children, long past midnight, so feels very safe. I've never stayed in a hotel so conveniently located for where I was.

The best thing is that the hotel's own restaurant is one of those with a terrace on the square. They do a reasonably priced and nice-tasting set menu although better, home-made food can be had elsewhere for the same price all around the square and beyond (the hotel's menu was exactly the same as one we found elsewhere in a Coca Cola sponsored café type place leading us to think they buy it in frozen/chilled and re-heat). We usually ate elsewhere, but after that it was a pleasure to come back to the hotel terrace for a drink (there was a selection of very nice wines served at the perfect temperature which was not a guarantee in Spain where we kept getting served ice cold red wine!) and not have to worry about having cash as everything could be added to the hotel tab - without the disadvantage of paying hotel prices (a glass of wine was around €2). The hotel would also give us a large bottle of water for €2 on our way out for the day and add that to our tab.

The free wifi does not extend to the rooms - this was stated in our booking confirmation so we had been warned, but we had been hoping to pick up a faint signal. However, in our room we could pick up a faint signal from the Tarragona tourist wifi and used that quite effectively in our room and out and about to google local restaurants, points of interest, etc.

In short even though there were definitely some ways in which the hotel could be improved, the location made it for us. Having our base in the placa de la font was not only convenient but a delight.

A note on choosing your room: we were given the impression that all rooms had a balcony and you paid the premium for one that was square-facing. However this was not the case. The cheaper rooms do NOT have a balcony at all. In the square facing rooms, the 'balcony' is actually just a railing with the ability to open the door and look out onto the square. It is not a balcony in the traditional sense on which you can sit out and have a drink. If you are drawn to the hotel by the balcony, bear these points in mind.
