“The best Roman museum in Spain”
Reviewed July 17, 2012

Tarragona was the capital of the Roman province of Hispania. The museum has an extensive collection of Roman mosaics, statues, daily artefacts and coins. The exhibitions are neatly presented, the building itself being a gem to visit. On a very hot day, you'll appreciate the air conditioning too. For history buffs, only Segovia matches Tarragona. Do yourself a favour and visit the Roman ruins scattered all over town along with the museum.

“One of the Best Archaeological Museums in Spain”
Reviewed April 26, 2012

The National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona is located in Tarragona and is one of the best archaeological museums in Spain. It is housed in a new 4 story building (built in 1960 by the architect Francesc Monrova) on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean. The building's top three floors house the museum and the basement shows part of the original Roman wall. To make the museum fit into the rest of the square, stone was taken from the Medol quarry for the museum, the same stone that the Romans used. The museum has a large collection of Roman artifacts that include 25,000 pieces. Pottery and sculpture are in abundance. The sculpture includes busts of the Roman emperors and sculptures of the Roman gods Venus and Minerva. It also has a big collection of mosaics, some with very large dimensions. One of the mosaics is called the "Cap de Medusa", and this is a second century mosaic that is very beautiful and considered one of the most perfect Roman mosaics in Spain. This museum is really impressive.
