“Old fashioned but convenient and clean”
Reviewed June 29, 2010

The Hotel Lauria is perfectly located at the coastal end of the Rambla Nova (which is basically the heart of Tarragona). It is only about 10 minutes from the train station too. A short walk up to the Old Town, or a stroll down the Rambla Nova to the new town - the Hotel Lauria is extremely convenient.

The rooms are very old fashioned - dark wood and old fashioned bed spreads etc - however they are comfortable and very large. We had a TV and air con in our room as standard. The showers were not great - hardly any water pressure - but hot. The bathrooms were large and clean...however we did notice that the water coming out of the taps was an odd colour - perhaps they have rust problems.
The swimming pool looked very nice - not that we went in it! (It was February!)

The staff were very helpful and friendly, and it felt very safe. We only paid about €40 per night for the room so we thought it was very good value. Would recommend for anyone on a budget who just wants a convenient and clean place to lay their head.

The hotel is in a lovely, quiet location just a few streets away from the old town but very close to the train station. The rooms are large and comfortable if a little dark and old fashioned. The highlight for me was the balcony looking out over the hotel's courtyard and swimming pool, a real haven of tranquility.

Stayed here for 2 nights Oct 09 as were meeting up with friends who were also booked into this hotel for a few days. The hotel is in a great location, but it badly needs a makeover - and the foul drain smells sorted. We paid for parking which is in a small garage at the back which can be quite difficult to manoeuvre into because of the very narrow lane. When we checked in we waited quite a while for someone to come and open the garage door for us, and had same problem again when we returned after a day out the following day - so think they could do with more staff! Mind you the price of parking - at 10 euros per day - is quite reasonable and I'm sure is much cheaper and more convenient than trying to find parking nearby.

On checking into our room (118 overlooking the pool) we immediately noticed a very strong smell like air freshener or insect spray. The smell was quite overpowering and quiet off-putting! We then opened the bathroom door and noticed a very strong stale smell. The room itself was clean but very basic and dated - and quite depressing to be honest. Has a small flat screen TV but no fridge.

Our friends whose room was on same floor but at other side overlooking side street (room 104) also commented on similar smells in their room. When you'd been in the room for a while you got a bit used to the smells but every time you went to the bathroom the smell was horrible. Following day, after housekeeping had cleaned the room, the same strong smell of air freshener was there when we entered the room so I suspect they are trying to mask the foul smells with air freshener - which clearly isn't working! We noticed the same foul smell as in the bathroom when we walked through the main entrance hallway coming into the hotel from the street so suspect this foul smell is coming up from the drains. They really need to sort this out as it's disgusting, and I really could not recommend this hotel because of this problem.

Breakfast at the hotel was OK at 8 euros per person but not great. Tried a cafe across the road one day for breakfast but it was more expensive for smaller selection. However, it was a public holiday and many cafes were closed that morning so on other days I supect you could find somewhere nearby which is better value for breakfast.

For eating out I can highly recommend Pasta Nostra next door and also the Rok Bar a couple of doors up and nearer to the sea has a great atmosphere and very friendly staff.

The purpose of the trip was to visit Tarragona not to stay in a flash hotel.
We thought the location was fantastic & 64 Euros a night represented great value, the room was large the double bed wasn't but at least we scored the "cama matrimonio" unlike the 2 other couples we were with. However we missed out on a balcony.
Unfortunately our room was on the first floor overlooking the pool & each morning they hose down the pool area & move all of the sun chairs & tables - quite a noisy enterprise.
The air con did not look up to much but it worked surprisingly well.
We didnt have breakfast as the bar area is ok but does not compare to the many out door locations nearby.
Apart from the slight noise issue this is a good spot & has been said elsewhere very friendly & helpful staff at reception.

Excellent location. We came into town in the middle of August on a weekend and no reservations. Except for this hotel and the Hotel de la Font in the noisy plaza with small rooms, all other places were full. The rooms are a good size with a small screen TV. There is free Wi-Fi in the lobby and a computer that is always beening used. Some of the staff was friendly and some were kind of short. Catalans are not very friendly in general. There was noise form the street and also a lot of furniture was being moved in the middle of the night every night. We moved rooms but we only got more noise from the bar in front. There is no refrigerator or coffee maker. They had clean towels and the minimal bath amenities. There is also a pool that we did not use. We had to park in the Pedrera parking because theirs was full. With a discount with the hotel stamp was $14 Euros a day. We went to Capuchino for coffee a few doors down, since they wanted $8.00 for a stark continental breakfast. We had a good expensive seafood meal in the fishermen’s Warf at La Ancora. Tarragona was a lot more interesting than we expected. There are also a lot of fun small towns to visit like the Poblet Monastery.

Booked 2 double rooms and car parking direct by email from the UK. No problems.
A small but certainly adequate hotel in a great location for the tourist sites in the lovely city of Tarragona. Clean comfortable rooms, friendly and accommodating staff.
