Last visit two years ago, I rated this restaurant in the top two in Sitges. However, my recent visit has changed that opinion. I had steamed mussels first course, which had a delicate white wine and peppercorn sauce. However, very few were large, white and plump -- many being rather small, even tiny, and orange.
I came here specifically for the sweetbreads, which two years ago was fantastic. I was disappointed this time. I don't know if it was the quality of the meat (not really prime selection?) or the sauce (too heavy?), but I was not impressed. It was served with 4 tiny asparagus spears.
In general, the service was attentive if just slightly pretentious. I think the complaints in TA reviews about slow service may be due a disconnect of expectations. This restaurant seems aimed at the classic dining experience expected often in continental Europe where the table is yours for the entire evening and it is not unusual to spend 2 or 3+ hours for dinner. The decor and location are exceptional.
Based on this visit, I now agree with many TA reviews that Maricel is overpriced. My two dishes with water, no wine or dessert, came to over 45 euros. If everything had been perfect, it would have been worth it. If a restaurant is going to charge exceptional prices, it should be certain that every dish is also exceptional every time.
