“Still love it”
Reviewed June 13, 2012

The Santa Maria is a friendly hotel in a perfect position, overlooking the promenade and beach in Sitges. From the balcony, if you have one, you can enjoy a glass of wine whilst watching the world go by, with a perfect backdrop.
Having visited before, we were a little concerned by some negative comments on travel websites, but we found the place as good as ever. The rooms are not as smart as some, with lots of old wooden furniture - those seeking an American clone may be disappointed - this is a very European hotel. The bathroom was smart and clean with two basins and a bidet.

On entering the restaurant we were greeted like long lost friends by the waiters even though it is 3 years since we last visited, and we found the food, especially the seafood, as good as ever - not as exotic as some Sitges restaurants, but well cooked and enjoyable.

There are no tea/coffee facilities in the rooms which is a little disappointing, otherwise we found it a very enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Pick a room on the sea side with a balcony. It can be noisy at night during festivals. The festivals...

We were initially booked in at La Nina- room with terrace and seaview, but the room was unavailable, so the Receptionist there arranged our booking to be changed to La Santa Maria (a sister hotel), a few minutes away (and nearer to the Central area). We were upgraded there for the inconvenience, to a large Superior room with terrace overlooking the seafront. Lovely room with a great view and close to all amenities. A 10 minute walk from the station. The staff were friendly and helpful- especially Jesus and Eva on Reception. The breakfasts were OK- but we didn't eat there in the evenings on this occasion. I did so on my last visit to Sitges, and the food was good. Also, judging by the queues of people waiting for a table every evening it still is! If you like a very good steak, try the Buenos Aires restaurant (beyond the Church)- it is fantastic, with lovely, attentive staff. It's about a 10/15 minute walk- but a warning- do book a table first!!

Room Tip: 4th (top) floor room overlooking the sea has the largest terrace with table, chairs and sunloungers.

I have visited this hotel for about 6 years in a row with 2 children ( and my wife).
The location is superb, right on the best part of the beach.
It is value for money and the breakfast is excellent.
if you want a room with a seaview/balcony ask beforehand.
the rooms are large.
There is also now free WIFI just beside the reception, where you can sit down comfortably in peace.
I have read people complaining about no BBC TV. Big deal, stay at home if you want that
Now admittedly the restaurant needs a proper manager to sort it out but you can't have everything.
So my review is based on the hotel.

La Santa Maria was run by a couple for many years, but Antonio died two years ago. His widow is still running it (and her two other nearby hotels) in a very hands-on manner. She speaks many languages. Her best asset is the position of all three, right on the seafront. The restaurant has a long terrace under an awning. When you're sitting there, you have just a quiet road and the promenade (lined with palm trees) between you and the beach. Breakfast is standard international hotel, with plenty to choose from and very good fresh bread. A cute waiter brings you coffee and hot milk (but the other staff can be grumpy). We didn't try lunch, but at dinner the service was irritable and the food quite poor, which is a shame, as the large round tables are well presented and the setting very romantic.

We booked with booking.com. The first problem was that we were shown into La Pinta, one of the other hotels in the group. It's nearby, but has a 'closed up' air (we did arrive on 19 Sept) and no atmosphere. Having complained about that, we were offered another twin room (which was not what we had booked) in La Santa Maria. It was on a sort of mezzanine floor and had a large terrace, but the beds were not comfortable. After a couple of nights, we moved to a room with a double bed on the 4th (top) floor. This had a balcony and a nice view to the back across town to the hills.

Staff were perfectly pleasant about our requests to change rooms. The bathrooms were well equipped (e.g. bidets, hairdriers) and towels were good. Beach towels are available free, and aircon (which is reasonably quiet) is also included in the price.

We feel that it's time the owner invested some of what must be considerable income on upgrading the beds. The rooms could do with some pictures too (although we didn't see any top-price rooms). A rating between 'average' and 'good' would be fairer than plain 'average'. La Santa Maria is a lovely building in a perfect position. The owner is clearly struggling a bit. We wish her well in keeping her business going and improving what she offers.

Room Tip: If you're going for the back, choose the top floor for views. Be very clear about which building...

If you want to be close to the beach, this is your hotel.
The room was quite big, but basic. The bed was a bit small and very hard.
The food is good and the terrace is one of the best in Sitges.

We have stayed at La Santa Maria twice before, in 2005 and 2003. We love Sitges and were pleased to discover it hadn't changed much in the six years since our last visit. Hotel is great; we again had a room with a sea view on the first floor (last time we had a top floor room with superb views of the beach and Sitges' lovely old church) - room has everything you'd need: TV, fridge, air-con, clean functional bathroom and comfortable beds. The restaurant is excellent and always busy; popular with locals, always a good sign! We ate there every night; paella maybe a little too salty though. Beach is a minute's walk away and the weather was excellent; hardly a cloud in the week we were there! A few gripes...the building is very old and could do with a touch-up; some repointing etc. also, curtains in room were dirty and half hanging off their rails. Avoid mid to late august: it is festival week and we discovered (as they were assembling the stage outside our hotel room) that there would be music until 4 am every night for about 3 or 4 nights of our stay...we had a few sleepless nights but an excellent atmosphere nonetheless.
