“Nice Hotel, good beaches nearby”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2012

We initially booked for 2 nights but extending our stay after the location which was beautiful in Sitges. The hotel was 5 minutes walk from the beaches. If you want to go the Sitges Town Centre then it is a good 40 minute walk, but we enjoyed it walking by the sea. There is local rail bus which takes you to the end of road for €1.80. The hotel was clean and has one pool. Free wi-fi was a good added bonus. The Pizza restaurant downstairs, serves great ones in the evenings.

Do not eat on the restaurants on beach front but same food with cheaper prices go to Sitges town centre. Go into the side streets in the evenings which was bustling with people.

Room Tip: Ask for the sea view rooms

We decided to extend our long weekend in Barcelona at the end of July by adding a 4 night stay in Sitges and booked a Junior Suite at the Sunway Playa for us and our two children, aged 3 and 5. This turned out to be a great decision as we all had a great time.

Firstly, the hotel itself is maintained to a high standard and is pretty much what you'd expect to find from a four star hotel run as self catering apartments. Our Junior Suite was very comfortable and large, with generous sized bedrooms to a high finish and a good sized balcony overlooking the sea. The double bed in the master bedroom was oversized and very comfortable. The bathroom and shower were also very large and to a high standard. The kitchen area, however, wasn't quite up to the finish of the rest of the apartment, with a very basic two element electric hob and no toaster - not a huge problem, as we only used it a couple of times to knock up simple breakfasts. The fridge was a good size, however, and more than adequate for what we needed. The room, on the third floor, was very quiet at night and we all got a good night's sleep every night.

The location of the hotel was perfect for us as it was almost opposite the main family beach in Sitges - a lovely shallow lagoon-like crescent with a small beach bar and beach showers, and lots of rock pools for the children to explore at the far ends. We ended up spending most of our mornings at the beach as we all loved it. It wasn't so convenient for getting to the main part of town though - the first evening we tried walking all the way in with the kids who just didn't have the legs to get there and it was a bit of a trial in the end. Fortunately after that we discovered the tourist bus that picks up from right outside the hotel and used that whenever we wanted to go into town for dinner (which was most nights - and I've put up reviews). All very easy as this bus seems to pull up every 15 minutes or so. When we didn't get the bus back, a taxi was around 7 EUR for the 4 of us.

We ate at all three restaurants at the hotel during our stay and found them to be pretty good. The pizza restaurant terrace goes right out into the pool area and is a very handy place to grab lunch. Quality of the pizzas was good, pasta was distinctly average (but large portions). The two restaurants at the front of the hotel are quite different in quality - one is more cheap and cheerful and the other more up-market Mediterranean one does pretty decent fish dishes (and has better service).

One note about the buffet breakfast, though. This wasn't quite up to a four star standard, and while acceptable it really was a little on the basic side. I suspect this was down to the limited number of people they were catering breakfast for. However, it was nice to have real coffee available from the two automatic cappuccino machines in the buffet area. If you're considering paying up front for the bed and breakfast option, I'd say think about just paying for breakfast as you go instead - so you can make your own decision about how often you have breakfast at the buffet. Strangely the indoor buffet area didn't seem to be air conditioned very well, so it got quite hot and stuffy as the sun worked it's way over. Is much nicer to eat outside on the terrace.

The kids loved both of the swimming pools and the jacuzzi, all of which were fairly quiet most of the time. It was very easy to move from one pool area to the other - handy as the sun tends to be over the inner pool in the morning and over the outer one in the afternoon. Also very easy to get loungers and we had no need to put towels down during any part of our stay, even when we spent the morning at the beach - a great relief after the nonsense that you get at some hotels. The hotel website mentions something about childrens' entertainment, but we didn't see any when we were there. The small and fairly basic covered playground by the inner pool did get some use though. There is a very friendly and helpful life guard on duty too.

Other good points include the grocery shop in the basement which was surprisingly well stocked and not too expensive - though it's worth checking the opening hours notice in the morning as this seemed to change day to day. Despite what some other reviewers say, we found most of the staff to be pretty friendly and helpful. The clientele was a good mix of Spanish, Dutch and English (all mainly young families) and were generally friendly too.

Wireless internet (free) was usually pretty good and we could get a signal in our room on the third floor most of the time. There was also an ethernet socket in the room which would give you a wired internet connection. Both the flat screen TVs in the bedrooms had free HDMI sockets for plugging in external devices. I've attached a few photos to show what our Junior Suite looked like.

Oh, one other thing I should mention is that communication with the hotel before arriving was a little patchy. I didn't get an email confirmation after booking direct through the Sunway website (which is the cheapest way of booking) and it took a few tries before I was able to make any contact with anyone who could provide one. Most frustrating thing was not being able to dial direct to the hotel itself - the only published numbers connect you to the Sunway call center. This is probably another area they could make a little improvement, as I wasn't completely sure everything was ok until we arrived.

Overall I would highly recommend the Sunway Playa to young families looking for a beach holiday in Sitges (although maybe not to couples looking to spend most of their time in the main center). We all had a great holiday there and would definitely consider returning for a short break again.

---

And if you were wondering, Sitges is pronounced SIT-CHESS (although our five year old girl insists on referring to it rather sweetly as 'sit-chee-ose')

Room Tip: The Junior Suites are perfect for a family of four. Worth asking for a room on a higher floor in adv...

We stayed at the hotel August 2012.The hotel was very nice however it was spoilt by a very noisy disco night club about 500 metres along the beach from the hotel called ATLANTIDA.We stayed for 7 nights and 4 of them were spoilt by very loud music which we could hear all night from 11pm until 6AM.We saw POLICE cars going there and the music was quieter for a bit ,then it was turned up.We spoke to other guests who also had complained about this club as well.BEWARE if you stay in a room which overlooks the SEA and GOLF COURSE. because thats the side its on.We enjoyed Stiges, holiday and hotel but wouldn't stay again at hotel because of this. This hotel is a the quieter end of resort, so the beach club noise was disappointing.Thats why we give it a 3/5 not 4/5

Room Tip: Choose a room that's not on side of golf course because its very noisy.

Dear Madam,

Thanks for taking the time to write a review of our hotel in Sitges, although I am sorry to read that your experience while staying with us was not perfect. You are completely right that we had some problems in the last days with the Atlantida Disco, which opens in summer on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. They were playing their music louder than they are allowed to do (apparently there was a special occasion called "Barcelona Girlie Circuit), and there was not much we could do besides calling the local authorities. As you say, police was helping not only hotels in the area but also inhabitants to try to stop that loud music but, as you wrote, their effort was not always very successful on those particular days. Unfortunately, there was not much more we could do and, although all our rooms are completely isolated to avoid noises, music from the disco could be heard, particularly in those rooms where guests enjoyed to keep their balcony doors open.

We hope that the problem with the club is now solved, as they seem to be keeping their music on a normal volume. Even so, if the wind blows in the direction of the hotel, it may be heard at some point if balcony doors or windows are kept open, which is unnecessary since (of course) we have air conditioning.

Anyway, as I said, I regret that your holidays in Sitges were not perfect because of this unfortunate incident. I hope that it does not prevent you from coming to our beautiful town again in a close future, even if you don’t honor us with your confidence again, which I wish that you may reconsider.

Best regards,

J. Oskar Stöber Blázquez

My family had 2 rooms on the 3rd floor for 3 nights. The rooms are very spacious and have everything you might need, we had great views and the fridge and free wi-fi were welcome.
The hotel is in a great spot if you make use of the free bikes, which we enjoyed.
There are good beeches nearby and the prom is good to cycle and walk. Sitges is a bit too far to walk in and out of on a regular basis but no problem to bike. there is a train/bus that run along the front on an irregular basis too, plus buses.
The only real gripe I have is that a wedding on Saturday night was loud (beyond reasonable)
We were told they would move indoors at 11.30 but it was 1am and if you had been close to the indoor function room you would have been without sleep much later than that. I think they should have controlled the volume much better and limited the time more closely. For this reason I would hesitate to rebook on another occasion but would probably weigh in favour of the positives.
As an aside, the breakfasts served mainly at room temperature and the options could be improved - if the juices and milk etc were chilled it would be much nicer.
Reading back through about the staff I would imagine there have been improvements - the front desk staff were friendly and very helpful. The hotel could be fantastic and is still a good bet.

Room Tip: Ask if there's a wedding on!

This is a fantastic hotel with impressive accomodation. We stayed in a semi-open 1 bed apartment which was spacious. The advertised "sofa bed" in the seperate living room was actually the biggest bed I've ever seen (& the most comfortable). The furniture was in excellent condition, most of it seeming brand new and the pictures on the hotel's website do not do it justice! Two tvs were provided with two BBC channels plus cbbc. Staff were friendly and accomodating at all times, cleaning the rooms daily and attending speedily to concerns. Although initially wary of the distance from the town, the bikes provided were a fun and speedy way to travel about, with sizes available for all ages. Although we found the restaurants expensive, they were on a parr with most restaurants in Sitges.

Wi-fi was useful although the coverage was rather erratic at times-but we were there for a holiday so that was not a major issue for us. The views from the balcony were amazing, right on the seafront. The closest sandy beach was a small circular bay, approximately 50 yards away, although two of us were mildly stung by jellyfish on two different days in that bay so would recommend the ones slightly further down the promenade which were clearer with fantastic waves!

Our only negative was the glass sliding doors between the pools. For safety they would benefit from having stickers on them as in the light it was difficult to see whether they were open/closed and as a result my nine year old son ran into one, resulting in a massive bump on the head and nasty bruising. Despite these mishaps it was a relaxing and enjoyable family hotel which I would heartily recommend.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms had afternoon shade-HUGE bonus!

The apartment hotel is in a quiet part of Sitges and we stayed here for 6 dayes in the middle of June. We enjoyed the stay very much and will recommend it for families with kids. The shop at the hotel was also good.

An apartment hotel where the self catering part shares the facilities of the main hotel. It is in the quieter (better?) part of Sitges with on site (protected) car parking. Three restaurants, one a bit iffy but generally the food is good and buffet breakfast is superb. It is about one and a half mile walk long the esplanade to the centre of town. This is not unpleasant and the architecture of the big villas along the front are impressive. We did not stay in SItges for a holiday but if we did we would only stay in this hotel

Room Tip: An upper floor room with balcony overlooking the sea. Try to avoid the swimming pool side as it is n...
