“Love this place!”
Reviewed September 4, 2011

The Hotel Romantic exceeded the Expecations of myself and my friend. The location was everything we wanted and the building itself was incredible. We loved the high ceilings and the amazing collection of paintings, statues and artworks giving it an oldie worldie feel. Even in the heat the hotel stays cool, in every which way. The layout is like a kitch maze and the grounds are wonderful, with breakfast outside in the vast garden allowing you to affect introductions with fellow travellers and like minded friends! Breakfast itself was very pleasant with a wide choice of cold cuts, cheeses and pasteries. The staff were very amiable and helpful to all the needs we had! Thank you Hotel Romantic, our love affair was with you!!

Room Tip: If you like oldie worldie and dont have ridiculous expectations of grandure then you'll love it...

Situation Excellent. Ambience good. Garden - paradise, particularly when enjoying the good breakfast. Staff friendly and efficient. Public areas very pleasant, tastefully presented, and interesting art works. Feel of a different age.
Bedroom very poor. Outdated, cramped and bathroom barely fit for purpose. Rooms do not meet to-days expected standards by a long shot.
Considering bedrooms - poor value for money. Unlikely to return

I wish I could only say good things about the Romantic, I really wanted to, but it's a very old building. The wiring and plumbing seem to be as old, and we didn't always have a working light in the bathroom, and we had to have a couple of cold showers due to no hot water. The walls were crumbling and the floors throughout, although tiled, were very dusty and dirty under bare foot. There is no lift and I initially had to carry my cases up three floors of steep winding steps up to our room in 'the gods'. Once there I had to express my dissatisfaction with the small size of the room and the (non) balcony which I had paid extra for. We were transferred to a room with a 'real' balcony but it was at an additional extra cost to me.
However, I have still managed to come away from the Romantic, with very fond memories of the beautiful gardens where we had breakfast, and whiled away an hour swinging in a hammock. Then there is James 'more coffee, darling?' who made us feel very relaxed immediately.
We hired a push bike (again, probably as old as the house) that got a puncture of the first day, a replacement had faulty brakes on the second day, and on the third day, the cycle company booked through the hotel refused to loan us another bike, as the faults were apparently our doing. We ended up not having to pay anything for the bikes, but it also meant our running, cycling plans were scuppered.
You have to adjust to life at the Romantic, it's not modern life, which is ok if you have the time (on you precious holiday) to make the mental adjustments without getting wound up.

Would I stop someone from staying here? No. Would I stay here again myself? No.

Room Tip: Travellers who return regularly get the best rooms, so make friends with the staff if you want to be...

We stayed there last year and my partner like the "quirkyness" of the place and it does have a gorgeous garden for breakfast which then turns into a bar. Unfortunately i forgot how bad it was but on the last visit it confirmed that I will never book it again. The rooms at small and haven't been decorated/updated in decades. The bed was incredibly unconfortable and made the loudest noise when turning ove that would wake the other person up. I'm not sure what made the noise, it wasn't the frame I think it's a plastic mattress protector but I didn't check. It's also incredibly noisy, in the front you get all the scooters flying by and whilst the back is better the neoghbours have a german shepherd which barks at anything that moves. It's also extremely over priced for the pokey rooms and the substandard bathrooms (although they are clean).
Staff are friendly though.
There are a number of new modern hotels on the sea front which we'll try next.

Room Tip: book early and get the back room with the balcony (and barking dog)

Apart from groups of French pensioners it is mainly men who stay here. Expect to be kept awake at night by the men as they make friends and invite themselves in to each other’s rooms.

A dysfunctional family is in charge and they provide unintentional entertainment. Sadly they haven’t a clue how to run a modern hotel. Luckily they have Manuel (sp) who does everything from serving coffee at breakfast (ghastly) to cocktails (strong) in the evening.

But maybe that’s the point of this place. If you are a masochist it’s a good place to stay - your senses will be beaten to death from the appalling artwork to the excruciating pain of sleeping in beds with plastic covered mattresses and a thin sheet.

Have stayed at the Hotel Romantic 7 times now. There is plenty to come back for. A warm welcome, friendly staff, who remember you. Hotel ooses charm and full of painting and antiques. Breakfast has plenty to offer, although many clearly are making up rolls to take to the beach later! Great bar and the garden where breakfast is taken is a delightful shady place. There is a further garden area many people miss with sun loungers which is really peaceful.
Rooms are reasonably sized with basic but old fashioned furniture with character. Many rooms have art work and impressive origional ceiling paintings. Bathrooms are pokey and the shower curtains and fittings are in desperate need of updating. Cleaning of rooms is adequate, towels changed daily and bedding twice weekly.
Generally the clientele are ones who return time and time again and mostly late thirties and above so reasonably respectful of others staying and don't make too much noise.
There is some street noise in certain rooms, but then Sitges is packed in the summer and that's inevitable where ever you stay.
Prices have gone up quite a lot in the last 5 years for the accomodation combined with the rising value of the euro to the pound makes the Romantic less value for money than it used to be. The only thing that has made me check out other hotels and book elsewhere is the price of staying there. There does appear to be regular decorating of rooms, with a lick of paint, but bathrooms are in desperate need of upgrading.
With a bit of shopping around you can find soemthing at least 1/3 cheaper, but which lacks the character.
I'd recommend you stay in a room with a balcony as you'll face into the garden and it'll be quieter.

Not the best location but the price reflected that. Great terrace to sit outside on balmy evenings. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The room was ok and adequate for my needs, though it faced nieghbouring roofs!! It was very clean throughout. The breakfast was fine - although the tea and coffee left a bit to be desired!! Don't go here in October, when mosquitos are an issue!!
