If you want an escape from Barcelona or even from Montserrat then the walk to the summit of St Jeromi is the thing to do. If you visit the Tourist Info centre near the monastery they will give you a map with directions starting from the top of the Funicular railway. (Do not try and walk from the monastery..it is up all the way!) The maps says the walk takes just over 2 hours....allow at least 3.
Leaving the railway the walk climbs very gently under the huge domed rocks with great views. It is only towards the end that you have to climb eventually emerging through the trees to reach the summit. Take plenty of water and a good picnic. The route back down is mainly amongst trees with a final descent down several flights of steps along a gorge back to the monestery.
We did this in October...and it was hot enough...be prepared if doing it in warmer months but do it....and watch out for the climbers clinging to the sheer walls or standing on top of the rocks.
