“lovely one night getaway from Barça”
Reviewed April 29, 2012

first of all, keep in mind that this is a hotel attached to a religious community, catering, i suppose, primarily to pilgrim-types. so. don't expect ANY frills.
there are twin beds in every room, so honeymooners (like us) be forwarned!
the town *completely* shuts down at 6pm. so if you want to eat or drink later than that, bring your own picnic or buy food and bottle of wine (which were cheap and delicious) ahead of time at the little market! we had a room facing the view, which was absolutely magnificent. however, once again, be forwarned, the bells ring *EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES ALL NIGHT LONG* so bring ear plugs. we had read the reviews and knew about this issue, so we brought some and it was fine. but it really is a must!
the hiking trails are super awesome and afford incredible views over the countryside. take advantage of it!
breakfast was fine. nothing impressive.
also, when we were there, the boys' choir was on holiday, which i was disappointed about, since it did not say that anywhere online. but, it gave us more time for hiking, which was what we had actually come to do anyway!
all in all, it's a totally fine place to stay. very clean, and does the job.

Room Tip: bring ear plugs no matter what!!

Their own website always says no availability - we turned up and it was practically empty. Basically we spent a day in Barcelona and was planning on finding a B&B on the way to Montserrat but it's mostly motorway and only an hour away so we turned up after dark and hoped we could find somewhere to sleep because their website said the hotel was full and I had read previous review that said it was booked up really far in advance so I presumed I was too late. However with only the hotel or the apartments available we tried the hotel first and they said they had room - so we booked in at I think about 79 Euro's. We had booked the apartments for the following evening but decided to go for the hotel option instead (the hotel and the apartments share reception) because breakfast was included.

We were allowed to unload at the hotel but then you have to park your car down a hill about 10 minutes walk from the hotel and walk back up. Pleasant enough and it's nice to have few cars (only work vans!) in the bascilica area.

The lady on reception was helpful.

The room was clean and spacious and the shutters kept out all the light. There are plenty of builders around at about 5.30am though right outside the front of the hotel, re-surfacing the square outside the bascilica. It was ok to hear this for 1 morning but we heard the same from the apartments and it gets tiring, combined with the bells chiming every hour. It was a beautiful basic room - I suppose it's not their fault that the area's having so much work done to it - maybe it'll be finished for the summer season? The open window gave us a view of the front door of the bascilica so you can't beat the location.

The reataurant in the hotel opens at 8pm and closes at 9.30pm and there's no other option if you arrive without food of your own after the shop shuts. We ate there, 21 Euro's for 3 courses. The food was rank and the waiter couldn't understand why we were annoyed. I returned a tuna salad (brown lettuce and tinned tuna) and they quickly swapped it with soup which was basically a stock cube. The main I chose was fish of the day - it was a price of tuna, surprisingly large but it'd been really overcooked and wasn't served with anything else, not even a few veggies. I ordered what I thought was apple pie for desert and it turned out it was a soggy brown apple that had been soaked in cinnamon? Gross. Advice - GIVE THE RESTAURANT A MISS.

There was quite a bit of fruit for breakfast, cereal and bacon etc so that was good. We snuck out a self put-together salami sandwich for lunch and filled our flask. There were no staff around so I don't know if we were able to do this?! But it was nice at around 12.30 ;-)

Room Tip: The front rooms like ours have a good view of the bascilica and were worth putting up with building...

This is a fantastic place to stay with amazing views of the sunrise, hills and the Basilica if you're lucky enough to get one of the best rooms at the front. If you're visiting with children, it's good to know that one child can stay in your room free of charge. The out of season rate from November to March is good value for a triple room. The bells didn't bother us. The reception area is a bit basic, but that doesn't matter too much and there are some interesting pictures on the walls as well as a wooden virgin and child watching over the reception area. This would make a great base for exploring the mountain behind on the well-marked trails. Highly-recommended.

We chose to stay overnight here so that we could enjoy some mountain hikes, time in the Basilica, and scouting out the immediate area. It was a great choice. First, the hotel room was exceptionally fine--we were lucky to get a room looking out over the mountains and the entrance to the Basilica. It was a comfortable room that was well cared for. The restaurant is beautiful and the food very good. Snacks can be purchased at the market nearby with a discount if you are staying at the Abat. Very nice to relax with some cheese and wine while you listen to the church bells and watch darkness fall. Very peaceful. We also enjoyed the boys' choir in the evening. Getting there was easy from Barcelona and the directions provided by forum posts on TripAdvisor made it an easy trip. One of our best experiences in two weeks.

This is one of Europes most fantastic places if you want to enjoy very special mountains and walk in fantastic paths and really enjoy the wilderness. This was our third trip to Montserrat and we will for sure come back many more times. This 3 star hotel has small rooms but if you are lucky you will get a room with windows out to the entrance of the Basilica and fantastic views out over the mountains and the valley. To the hotel there is also a Restaurant with fantastic food from this part of Spain. The service is excellent in both the hotel and the restaurant. So if you want to see something very different you have to check out this hotel. We have travelled a lot in in Europe but this place will for the rest of our lifes have a special place in our hearts.

Basic but tidy and clean hotel. The location is superb. I was lucky to be given a room with the front view. It was lovely to sit by the window and look outside. As there weren't many places to go for dinner. In fact, after 4-5pm, the few restaurants were closed. So, we checked out the hotel restaurant and the food was good. Breakfast that came together with the room package was decent too.

Staff was friendly and helpful at the front desk. And, the hotel lobby was wired. It made it easier for us as we had to make some last minute changes to our trip.

This hotel is perfectly located if you want to explore the mountain. I took my mother and she uses a cane and having the hotel room meant she could was to explore at her own pace. Parking on the mountain to visit can mean a very long walk uphill to the buses this would have been impossible.

Room Tip: Book early it is the only hotel and it books quickly.
