Actually we were there around noon. Start with funicular to the top of the Montserrat. What a great views! It was awesome, wonderful and a visit we like the most. Many ways to explore the area.
Basilica is very busy inside and to get close to Black Madonna takes time. Lin-ups are very long.

We usually took public transportation to all of the attractions. We joined a guided afternoon tour to Montserrat on our last day in Barcelona. It took a little over an hour from Centro Barcelona, the universitat metro, to Montserrat by private coach. It is different scenery in seeing Spain. Taking metros, in fact, could be quite boring and not able to see the whole of Barcelona. We found that the Spanish mountains and plains are beautiful and tranquil.

Montserrat has a rich and an interesting history behind. It has also some nice hiking/walking trails around the mountain if you have a few hours to spare. However, I would have had joined a whole day guided tour to Montserrat plus another activity e.g. Wine tasting to make the time more efficient.

If you visit Catalonia, you must make time to visit Monserrat, a huge monastery that is so impressive! Many visit to get healed and to see and touch the statue of the Virgin Mary. The church has a circle I. Front where folks open there arms to absorb healing energy. The Church is magnificent, and has a huge pipe organ. You can stay over night and take I. The beauty of the place and its views. There is a funicolare that goes up to the tip of the mountain, as well as a train that arrives there. A really inspiring place to visit, full of beauty.

Easy access makes this a perfect day trip from Barcelona, and the monastery in the mountains is definitely a place I'll remember in my mind's eye (if not in my dreams).

The national park which holds Montserrat is very beautiful - well worth a drive. It is about 45 minutes (each way) from Barcelona by highway. At the top of Montserrat there are the usual tourist facilities (cafeteria, etc.) & parking is free there for 30 minutes.
This is also a great place for hiking if you like steep trails. even if you don't hike (we didn't) it is worth the trip.
