Very few cities have walls that you can still walk, pretty much in their entirety, but Girona is one of them. Sure, heavily restored in many places but it gives you a great sense of how a fortified town must have felt. Start you walk at the entrance to the walls at the furthest point from the cathedral and old town, that way you approach the old town as you climb higher and higher.

“Absolutely delightful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2013

I did not walk all of it but picked it up half way. In summer I would advise a hat and sunglasses. The walk does have several lots of stone stairways so can be a bit tiring (especially carrying heavy backpack).

“Fantastic view in the evening (at sunset)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2013

The best time, when you can see beauty of Girona from old city wall - is sunset - because of location and lightning.
My opinion - Girona old center has a specific mystic flavor - it especially noticable in the calm warm clear evening, when sun goes away over mountains, gardens around the wall smell of warmed leaves and flowers, and birds fly over cathedrals. Romantic. It seems some miracle can happen.

We spend in Girona 3 evenings, and every evening we were walking along walls.

“Great views above the city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2013

Great panoramic views across the city from the walls.. some of which are nearly 2000 years old.. but all secure. Some steep sections. Maybe could do with a few more notice boards pointing out some of the main sites that are often in the maze of medieval streets below. Maybe best to go in the morning ... get the panorama view first and then later look around parts of the city at ground level and in the shade! Or just before sunset. Free access at all times.

“great way to see the town!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2013

I ended up walking the wall twice on my trip to Girona. I was there at Christmas, so there was hardly anyone else up there. Exploring the wall and the gardens was a lot of fun, you can peek through cracks into old abandoned buildings with trees growing through them, or sit on a bench under an old tree. Climbing up the towers gives a fantastic view of the old city and the surrounds. Photo tip: the light is fantastic at sunset and the Cathedral practically glows.
