“Best day of our vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 13, 2012

My girlfriend arranged the "Mountains & Castles" half day mountain bike ride during a late October vacation in Spain. It turned out to be the best day of our vacation! It was just the two of us and our guide, Dave Welsh, who went out of his way to tailor the trip to suit the weather as well as our individual riding abilities.

We met at the Girona Cycle Centre a bit later than the originally scheduled time, since the weather was overcast with rain earlier in the day. Dave did a great job of balancing the preferences of my girlfriend who is a sun lover and fair weather rider, and me who is a bit of a die hard that probably wouldn't want to change plans even if there was a cyclone in the forecast (Dave has a tough job).

Dave is a professional mountain bike racer and skills instructor, so he was able to determine our individual skill levels in the first few minutes. He adjusted the route accordingly, so we would both be challenged, but never in danger. After a couple hours of riding (mostly uphill) we were treated to an outstanding three course Catalan lunch at a remote restaurant in the mountains. During lunch he explained how many calories were in the lunch compared to how many we would be burning on the day’s ride, and noted that we would probably be “calorie negative” for the day. How often does THAT happen while on vacation?

After an excellent lunch we went back out into the cool October air, but quickly warmed up as we continued uphill for about another hour. At the top of the mountain were the ruins of a castle, a very special place for Dave since he was married there several years ago. We climbed to the top and had stunning vistas in all directions.

In addition to his obvious skills as a competitive rider and instructor, Dave went above and beyond to make sure we both had a memorable day. He is a good conversationalist with a great sense of humor. He’s also a Brit by heritage, so be sure to bring your best Monty Python impressions.

Don’t be put off by the references to “uphill”, since Dave would have gladly adjusted the ride if we had struggled or complained. The only thing that kept it from being a perfect day was the weather, which seemed to be the only thing that Dave couldn’t adjust. He promised to work on that for next time.

“Exceeded all expectations, Bravo!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

As a road rider, traveling with my husband who prefers MTB (but hey, in MN. USA there are no real mountains) We were eager and up for the challenge of a first time real MTB experience. We chose the Mountains and Castles MTB tour. Dave a MTB Racing Pro, and world class athlete has an intuitive grasp as a coach/trainer that would benefit any level rider (this is really special, as talent can not always teach) He inspired confidence and trust. His passion for the sport was contagious. Lunch was at the pinnacle in a ancient monastery and was an excellent traditional Catalan 3 course meal, with many fine choices. Downhill to finish the ride was exhilarating... The ride was very challenging, and deeply satisfying. As we left a little room for skill improvement, we will return next year!

“Fun Day in Girona!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012

We spent 6 days in Barcelona and decided to take a day and do a bike tour outside of the busy city. Upon reading all the positive reviews on Bike Breaks Day Tours, we decided to book with them. We were not disappointed! Our e-mails were answered promptly and we decided to take the medieval villages tour. We were greeted by Saskia at the train station and she had bikes in hand. We immediately left for our tour and it was great! Saskia was sooo friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. What I really liked was how the tour was personalized to suit our riding ability--as opposed to being in a large group with different types of cyclists. We stopped at a wonderful local place for lunch and then finished up our trip back at the train station, where we headed back to Barcelona. It was definitely a fun way to spend a day seeing a different part of Spain and getting some exercise too! I would highly recommend using Bike Breaks Tours--they were friendly, polite, and knowledgeable. It was a highlight of our trip!

Lisa and I spent a week -starting in Hotel Historic in Girona-cycling numerous cyclotourist routes in the region.Dave and Saskia were friendly, professional and very helpful in making our trip safe and fun.The 2013 Canondale hybrid bikes were great and the lights were useful for our longer days! Girona is a great base for a cycling holiday and Bikebreaks is first-class at bikes and tours.

“Great all around experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2012

The staff was very knowledgeable, the service was exceptional, and the bikes were excellent (especially for rental bikes - I rode a Cannondale super six!)! I would highly recommend BikeBreaks to anyone considering a bike tour around Girona, regardless of your fitness level or your expectations. I walked in without any expectations (i.e., no shoes, gear, etc.) and the staff was willing to work with me to make sure that I had a great experience. The route was amazing and exactly what I was looking for; a small, windy road with very little traffic around the Girona countryside; exactly what I would imagine a ride in the Vuelta to be like. I would also highly recommend the map, but plan for a little extra time getting out of Girona as some of the turns are a little tricky to find. I plan to come back again the time I'm in the area.
