We came across Caelum, with its window display of delicious looking pastries and cakes, during our wanderings of the Gothic Quarter. When we (party of 3) entered, there wasn't room on the street level floor so we were directed to the lower level. Expecting the worse, the opposite happened. Upon descending the curved, stone, staircase, we entered a most beautifully constructed cavern with very high, arched ceilings. As an Engineer, I appreciate that kind of stuff. The server explained that it was a Jewish bath house in the 6th century. We had a great cup of coffee and various cakes which, as is often the case, looked better than they tasted. And yes, it was a bit pricy. Still, it was worth the "price of admission".

'Stumbled upon this place quite accidentally while strolling around the old town in Barcelona. We never review places like this, mainly because we've been in so many and after a while, how different can one establishment like this be from the next, after you've ordered your coffee and cake? However, this place really stands out from the crowd and is worth writing about. 'Very nice atmosphere (painted furniture in shades cream and ivory), high ceiling (so quite cool indoors on a hot day), and charmingly decorated. Intelligent choice of background music (smooth, from the 1930s), not too loud, added perfectly to the ambience the owner has so successfully established. Delicious cakes (try the egg-yolk marzipan slice - 'was fabulous!) and good coffee. Yes, it was a little expensive, but well worth it for the quality of the experience that we enjoyed so very much. Two hot drinks plus two bottles of water and two slices of fresh, delicious cake for under Euro 20 equals two satisfied (and impressed) baroque-boys! This is a lovely place to rest for a while and what a delightful alternative to the clatteringly loud, over-lit, over-heated, over-crowded, all chrome and glass, generic cake shops that proliferate in most cities around the world. Thoroughly recommended!

We popped in here during our visit to Barcelona and quite enjoyed it. We each had coffee and pastry: I had cheesecake and my girlfriend had a cherry/honey cake with granulated sugar sprinkled on top. Both items were delicious. It's a cozy little place and we liked it.
