“They even had a danish menu”
Reviewed May 20, 2012

It feels really authentic and the food is great - when they present the dessert, you really wanna taste it all (I went with the lemon cheesecake and I highly recommend it)...

“Pricey but good”
Reviewed April 24, 2012

This restaurant is not very central but local people have found their way there during the 30 years it´s been there. You can either sit inside, in one of several small rooms, or outside. It was first recommended to us by Mey Hoffman, owner of a Michelin-starred restaurant, who said she used to go to La Bodega when she wanted good Catalán cooking. We have been here many times since then, but this was the first time we sat inside. The food has always been good - or we wouldn´t have returned - and the service is fast and very friendly. There´s a bit of a show when Today´s Specialties are shown by all the waiters. The problem is I can never remember what is what: either I get stuck on one dish and order that, or I have to ask the waiters again.
We had an excellent goat kid stew to share as a first course; then my wife had the prawns - big but few, and very expensive - but she enjoyed them immensely. I had fish which was fine. The desserts wer then displayed and we chose profiteroles and tocinillo del cielo ("bacon from heaven"; a kind of caramel custard with cream). Both were excellent. We had a bottle of red wine, a beer and sparkling water. If you don´t drink all the wine, you can take it with you in a special bag. We didn´t as it wasn´t worth taking an empty bottle... It all came to just over 100€ - well, I told you in the review title! But we´re coming back, it´s that good!
They are going to open up a cheaper restaurant just round the corner, El Davant, with a fixed price of 25 €. Good luck!

“Hmmm...”
Reviewed March 12, 2012

La Bodega is slightly off the beaten track but that didn't bother us as the Sunday Times recommended it. Sure, the service from the staff matched the interior - very welcoming - but the food is grossly overpriced and nothing special. €23 for a small dish of 7 pathetic little prawns? €23 euros for a steak and a handful of fries? Champagne (a celebration, not self indulgence) €60? The overall bill for six was €360 for two courses, 2 bottles of wine, champagne and couple of rums.

Now contrast that with a most wonderful meal in the Placa Reial (one of *the* places to eat in the centre of Barcelona apparently) at Marisco where the view of square was superb and the food was not only excellent, but so inexpensive by comparison that we questioned the waitress several times to confirm. The steak was half the cost (€11), the prawns must have been irradiated as they were so large (I can't recall the price but it was low). The bill for four was €136 but a direct comparison would be unfair as we ordered drinks by the glass and three of the four ordered tapas. However, there was so much food that it had to come in shifts as the table couldn't cope. First rate.

I suspect diners at La Bodega are taken in by the marketing - each course is paraded in so that making a choice is visual and departing nerves are anaesthetised because at the end of the evening bottles of liqueurs are left on the table without measure 'on the house'. And of course the owner personally says 'thank you' as you leave. Can't think why.

In summary, La Bodega offers good service, good ambiance, OK food, but is bloody expensive. My tip? Stay off the Ramblas, find side streets close by, go to Placa Reial and ignore the Sunday Times food critics.

“Surprisingly good”
Reviewed October 7, 2011

We had tried to go to another place that had been well reviewed both on Trip Advisor and in Frommer's, but it was small and fully booked. So we just window-shopped restaurants on our way back toward our hotel and encountered La Bodega. The staff was immensely helpful, particularly in trotting out the day's specials (although they went by so quickly, it was hard to remember everything), and English in the menu was very helpful. The food was much better than we expected. It's not cheap, but it's not outrageous, and certainly not overpriced. Outdoor seating was very pleasant.
