“A gem just off the The Ramblas”
Reviewed March 18, 2008

We've stayed in various hostels before and I was really pleasantly suprised when we entered the hostel. The exterior gave no indication to the well thought out, funky interior. It was super clean and tidy. The hostel is on the second floor and takes up one floor of a large building. It's just of The Ramblas which made it great as a base. It offered everything to make our four day stay comfortable and enjoyable. Access to the internet, kitchen with all the cooking utensils, a common eating area, a common room with a plasma tv and access to a outside terrace area. The staff were great and we never needed to consult a tour book or tourist info centre. The hostel had a great atmosphere with both young and older travellers getting on very well. The only negative was the location of our bedroom right next to the kitchen. No sleeping late option there with the early risers cooking you awake.

  • Liked — Friendly and helpfull staff, everything thought of like Internet access, comfortable common rooms etc.
  • Disliked — The noise level from the other residence was a bit too much at times, especially in the evenings.

I stayed at Downtown Paraiso Hostel between 11/16/07 and 11/23/07. This hostel was a bargain for the price and had an excellent location in the El Ravel section of Barcelona, a few blocks away from Las Ramblas.

I stayed in a 4 bedroom mixed dorm that had a sink, 4 bunkbeds and a balcony. There were lockers in the room but they were small (too small to fit a big travel backpack). The walls were thin and you could hear other rooms inside the hostel, this really was not much of a problem and the people staying here were courteous. The hostel has 4 bathrooms, 3 of them with showers. There is a small communal kitchen and a small entertainment area with TV/DVD. There was one communal computer, this did have technical problems during part of my stay, but it really did not bother me. The hostel also has VoIP phone that you can make international calls on, the per minute charge was reasonable for this service. The hostel staff was all in their 20’s, every one of them were helpful with getting information on attractions, tours, and bars/restaurants.

The El Ravel section of Barcelona is a little bit gritty but it really was not too bad. There are some really good bars in the area, if you are familiar with Lower East Side (New York City) then you would have an idea of what El Ravel is like. Besides that, the hostel is a 5 minute walk from Las Ramblas and the Liceu Metro station (green L3 line) so it is very convenient to just about anywhere in the city (even to go to Monserrat). Barcelona has one of the best run transit systems I have ever been on; get a T-10 pass which is good for 10 one way trips and you will easily be able to get to any other part of the city you need to. My other recommendation is to go on the Bus Tursitic, run by the cities tourism council – get the two day pass, it is a great way to see all of the city and get your bearings in the first couple of days.

The location really is excellent and if you are looking to see the sight on the cheap, I would highly recommend it. Barcelona is like any big city, you need to be street-smart and careful – this is not hard to do and you should definitely enjoy your time there.
