If you wanted to design a movie set for the Barcelona tapas restaurant, this would be a good place to start. Half a dozen steps leading down from a busy street, small tables with wooden stools, a discreet bar where white-shirted waiters quietly construct simple plates. An ancient wall refrigerator whose multiple doors hold all manner of surprises. Got that photo? Now let's get down to the food. La Bodegueta is just okay. Sure, everything is quality and the prices reflect that. But nothing is very original, or surprising, or outstanding. Catalan food is in the midst of a foodie revolution. Young chefs are everywhere trying new things. You can walk into tapas bars all over Barcelona that might not have the movie set look, but the food offerings are sensational. So why settle for a place like this with high prices and rather ordinary stuff? This is the kind of place the guide books love and the locals scratch their heads about.

Barcelona has almost 3 restaurants per block, so it is easy to get into a wrong one. This place has a nice setting on a pedestrian boulevard outside the actual restaurant, on a quiet street, but that is all. Food is average, prices are over average and service is fairly good and quick. Having over five thousand choices, I will not return to this place, and I strongly recommend you to avoid it and look somewhere else.

Went to this place after seeing Rick Steves recommendation, plus being suggested by Hotel Gallery staff. Very good paella; simple place which is down a few steps from the sidewalk, probably would have walked past it if we didn't have the street number. Since none of us spoke Spanish getting meal descriptions was a little tricky, but enjoyed it overall. Not a fancy place, and probably wouldn't go there when looking for a nice dinner out. Definitely recommend it, though.

My friend and I stumbled on this restaurant accidentally and ended up going back every night! The marinated goat cheese was beyond fabulous and the raw cod fish salad was excellent. We told the waiters to choose our plates for us ( I would not have normally ordered a raw cod fish salad ). They were excited about our openness to the different tapas and snuck in some extra tastes for free. For two college students, it was great to get glasses of wine for less than 3 Euro. The atmosphere was fun and didn't seem touristy. This restaurant is close to La Rambla, where most of the food is unauthentic and overpriced so we were over joyed to find this little gem. Highly recommend!! Be ready to use some spanish though, the waiters' knowledge of English wasn't vast which provided for much entertainment as we used gestures and odd explanations to communicate. I told the waiter I spoke German and he directed me to a German couple that was sitting near to us and all three parties ended up communicating through each other somehow. A great meal!!!
