The name of the restaurant comes from an old art's workshop owned by a famous painter of the Gothic Barri at the end of the XIX ct. In the heart of the Gothic Barri, the restaurant el Pintor is a Gastronomic reference in the authentic catalan cuisine using high quality local products. Every time we go to Barcelona we have to dine at El Pintor.
It is a restaurant where we feel at home - this is our place.
( We have other "our-places" in BCN after all these years visiting this magic city, but some are secret!!!!)
The food varies, The skin of the suckling pig can be very crispy one night and three nights later it's everything else but crispy.
Coming from Scandinavia you may feel the service a little strange. But this is the El Pintor way - like it or leave. We like it - but comment it every time.
Lamb shoulder - mmmmmhhh.
Suckling pig - very good
Bachalao in various ways - try it!!!
And of course beef with truffles and foie gras - smashing !!
Every time we visit El Pintor we ask for the same table. This way we make this good restaurant a part of our Barcelona.

Best meal we had in BCN! Some better offerings than the typical tourist-oriented restaurants. It's a little off the beaten path hiding off Placa Sant Jaume I.

This restaurant was recommended by a local tour guide. We weren't sure where we wanted to eat but dropped by this establishment around 7pm or so to check it out. We had a party of six but no reservations (our bad!) but decided we would like to dine there. When we entered we were confronted by the head waiter (?) who gruffly asked if we had reservations - when told no he grumbled but seated us. The place was sparsely occupied at the time. Our bare wooden table was chipped and scarred w/o tablecloth but was next to a very elegantly laid out but unoccupied table set for 10 or 12 with white table cloth, china and glassware. Obviously they had reservations. The head waiter's surly attitude continued thru the order taking. I ordered "wild boar" which was listed on the menu without caveat, but was told with a great deal of disdain that the season for wild boar was over. Had to request additional dishes/silver as an insufficient number were set on the table. Requested pepper (none was set out on the table) during the meal - head waiter returned and slammed it down on the table.
The subordinate wait staff were much more civil and accommodating. The food was pretty good.

I probably wouldn't eat there again.

My wife and I went there on the recommendation of our hotel. The setting is quite nice, and very convenient to the main tourist areas. However, our main dishes were not good. Her seafood fideau (sp?) was so overcooked as to be inedible. The shrimp in her dish were so small it was almost laughable, and they were so overcooked you could barely chew them. While my seafood stew with tarragon looked and smelled great,1 of the fish was terribly overcooked, 1 of the shrimp was so mealey as to be inedible, and another of the fish was so bland that I left more than half of it. The prices were relatively reasonable but as the saying goes, I guess you get what you pay for. Quite a disappointment.
