Description: Cal Pep offers a fresh and bright culinary experience with easy and quick preparations. Our restaurant concept grew from the idea of sharing the dishes, their tastes and flavours, in a 'tapas'-style. Faithful to this style, Pep invites us to enjoy light, exquisite and extremely varied dishes. Cal Pep is authentic Mediterranean cuisine, reflecting Pep's personal style and incorporating seasonal ingredients. You will enjoy fish, shellfish and fresh produce, all prepared with Pep's originality and flair. Welcome and happy dining! For a truly great tapas place, sit at the bar at old-school Cal Pep, Thomas Keller's vote for the best food in Europe. -- The Guardian The 'Tapas Institution' of Barcelona. There is no shtick here apart from superbly fresh seafood, served simply and on plates designed for sharing. -- The Telegraph

80 Euros plus tip for 5 crappy tapa dishes! Not! This highly, highly overated place is not worth the 90 minute lineup nor the schtick. The schtick is that they have a limited selection of items and you tell them what you don't want and then your server chooses your dishes for you. Nothing put before us was worth the wait or the price. You can eat at many other, much better places in Gotic for a half that amount, without the wait.

On our last night in Barcelona my husband and I were doing some shopping in the Barri Gotic area. We initally planned to eat at Tapeo Anem de Tapes, but discovered it was closed. We checked Yelp and Foursquare and discovered that not only did Cal Pep had many reviews and check in, but it was just a few steps away.

We arrived at 7pm, and saw that it was closed. However a line had already started to form. We decided to also line up and check out what the hype was about. We were lucky to be one of the first in line, people who weren't able to get seats had to wait about an hour until the first batch of people finished eating.

The concept was pretty cool as there were no menus. You just tell them what you prefer to eat, such as meat, seafood or vegetables and the chefs just make whatever food. Overall the food was very fresh and delicious, but it wasn't out of this world amazing. We spent 76 euros for 6 dishes, 2 beer and 2 wine. Not bad for a very filling and satisfying meal.

If you want the freshest seafood, right off the boat, prepared in an unfussy way, this place has no rival. I recommend sitting at the bar -- it gets quite lively and you'll have a great view of all the great food.

If you're heading here at dinner time, get ready to line up and wait for a very long time to get a place at the bar. The restaurant does take bookings for the back room, however you need to have a group of 8 or more to get a reservation.

I ate here whilst travelling solo in Barcelona and really enjoyed it. It was recommended to me before I left Australia by a chef and his girlfriend and I was fairly warned about the line up.

A lot of locals frequent this place and are willing to also line up, which is always a good pointer for finding good food. The food is traditional Catalan tapas and raciones and does not disappoint. A warning though, most people sit at the bar as part of a couple or a small group and then share their plates. If you are travelling single, you will not get to taste as many dishes as you will be too full to do so given that the serving size will not change for a person on their own, however the staff there will warn you of this if they think you are ordering too much up front.

I would suggest finding another solo person in the line and suggesting that you dine together so that you can get to try more dishes without wasting food and spending too much money. The atmosphere is very convivial so you would not have much difficulty in teaming up with someone else.
