Description: Opening its doors in 1836 to begin offering over 150 years of excellence, Restaurant de les 7 Portes is truly the most classic of Barcelona's eating places. Here, you can enjoy the finest Catalan cooking in an intimate setting or in one of the spacious banquet halls, accompanied by Spain's best wines and "cavas" (sparkling wines) from the well-stocked cellar. The restaurant is housed in the Pòrtics d'en Xifré, a building declared a national monument and the first place in Barcelona where running water was installed. In 1942, it became the property of Paco Parellada, founder of one of the foremost dynasties of restaurateurs in all of Catalonia.

Since we come from the food industry in California we were looking forward to this restaurant experience. The mushy flavorless asparagus were served with 3 bland flavorless sauces. Could not eat them. The rubbery calamari was coated with a dough that was not hot and not crisp. The paella was so salty that it was inedible.

On our last visit to Barcelona my friend suggested we have a paella at the 7 Portes. It was a busy evening, so waiting time was approx. 30', which we spent around the corner at the cava bar. When we returned at 9:00, we were shown to our table immediately. We ordered our paella and some wine. The waiter was very attentive and actually noticed you, unlike many other waiters that I have experienced in my life. After 20-25', they showed us the paella and took the plates to serve. A few minutes later the Maitre D came to apologize saying that the paella did not meet his standards and that he had ordered a new one, so we had to wait another 20'. However they immediately served us an octopus dish to make the waiting a bit more pleasant. When the paella was served, it was really excellent and probably the best I have eaten. The service continued to be very attentive and smooth. Price/quality is also very good. Upon leaving I congratulated the Maitre D for keeping such high standards, considering that this place is visited by many one-time tourist customers. Well done.

Old style building, lots of thing to sit and look at. Nicer sitting inside as the outside area is near a busy road. We were very well looked after and didn't have to queue for a table. It was great food although a little bit expensive for what it was. I think you pay a bit more for the privilege of eating here although I think it was well worth it. You don't have to get really dressed up, it was very relaxed and the atmosphere was great. I had the seafood risotto and couldn't manage a dessert unfortunately. All the food looked amazing.

So many of the staff in tourist locations in Barcelona are snobbish or incompetent. It was a pleasure to have well-trained waiters and other staff. The sea food and fish here are very well prepared. Unfortunatley, I tried the veal, which was terrible. Stay away from meat.
