Description: Opening its doors in 1836 to begin offering over 150 years of excellence, Restaurant de les 7 Portes is truly the most classic of Barcelona's eating places. Here, you can enjoy the finest Catalan cooking in an intimate setting or in one of the spacious banquet halls, accompanied by Spain's best wines and "cavas" (sparkling wines) from the well-stocked cellar. The restaurant is housed in the Pòrtics d'en Xifré, a building declared a national monument and the first place in Barcelona where running water was installed. In 1942, it became the property of Paco Parellada, founder of one of the foremost dynasties of restaurateurs in all of Catalonia.

This restaurant is ideal for tourists because, unlike to many places in Barcelona, it is open, with no break, from lunchtime through dinner/close. This is very convenient for jetlagged travelers and anybody else who is not necessarily in sync with the 9-10 pm Spanish dinner hour. The ambiance is also great. It's very Mediterranean, with bistro-style seating. The food was also quite good. They serve all the stereotypical specialties that foreigners expect in Spain, including paella, which is not a specialty of the Barcelona area but is quite good here. The menu is large, with a wide variety of dishes. It's one of those places where everyone in your group should be able to find something she likes.

Went here on a Saturday lunchtime. This restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the food was great. The waiting staff were very attentive and so the service was good. Quite an expensive meal but worth it.

The (wonderful and helpful) owner of the hotel where my friend and I stayed was very keen on 7 Portes and highly recommended it for both its atmosphere and its paella. Well, he was right about the atmosphere. I believe the restaurant was founded in the early 19th c. but the feeling is more 1920s. Very, very attractive. The waiters are soberly decorative, or at least professional-looking. Ours, however, fell down on the job: brought the wrong stuff to the table, forgot to bring other stuff, disappeared for long periods of time, and so forth. And the food was mediocre. I realize paella isn't a Barcelona specialty, but really, it's not all that hard to make it decently. The rice in mine was good, but the seafood was utterly dried out and rubbery--not really worth eating. I'd go to 7 Portes again to have a glass of wine and an appetizer, but nothing more.

We had two paella dishes, the veggie one was nice but the Rich mans was too salty. Dissappointing for 20 euros. Other then that the service and atmosphere was great.

Went for traditional seafood paella.
Great atmosphere and service. Experience the old Catalan restaurant before leaving Barcelona.
