The rooms have been renovated beautifully and the whole building has something really special about it! The hotel restaurant is a must, but prebook because its full most of the nights. Excellent location, close to the centre but quiet surroundings. Ideal for couples, very romantic! Very helpful staff! Breakfast is not included so watch out for the extra charge!

Me and my sister stayed here for 3 nights while we celebrated her 30th in Barcelona and we loved this hotel. We were thrilled with the price and the room was great in decor and size. The staff on the front desk were lovely and very helpful. Although we did not spend a lot of our time in the hotel it was a great place to crash, and although some may think it was noisy I think you would struggle to find a quiet hotel in Barcelona or any major city for that matter!!!! I would definately recommend this hotel to friends as it is close to the metro and within walking distance of La Rambla.

Stayed 2 nights. Off rambla and in a more residential, locals only area. Quick walk to hustle and bustle. Locals only cafes and restaurants. This hotel is a bit of an adventure, two lifts to access the rooms that are situated next to residence apartments. Good crash pad if you are on a budget but can't stomach a Hostal.

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent four-night stay at the Market Hotel. We were drawn by the spot-on NYTimes review, and agree: the decor is fun, the staff is great, and the room was large enough to easily swallow our four large pieces of luggage.

The hotel reception is not off an alley, but is in a "passage:" there is a huge difference between an American alley and an European "passage." Following a short taxi ride from the cruise port, we were promptly greeted and a porter helped us with our luggage, and escorted us to our room. The location is perfect for exploring Barcelona by foot, metro, or taxi, and we walked most of the time.

The restaurant and bar are both quite good and are packed with locals on the weekend. The wine list, like the menu, is perfect for those who are watching their euros. Service was un-rushed, accommodating, and professional. The hotel staff are wonderful; housekeeping is impeccable. The free apples and bottled water are a nice touch. We had breakfast at the hotel a couple of times, and it was well worth the 9 euros for the bottomless cup of coffee alone, and the buffet was unexpectedly extensive. (The patisserie across the street has huge baguette sandwiches and cafe con leche for 1.80 euros for breakfast).

Our balcony room was directly on Carrer del Comte Borrell, and we never noticed the noise some have complained about in their reviews. In addition to drapes, the room also had "rolladens" which would certainly help with alleviating noise if one found it to be a problem. Further, some of the concerns about safety voiced in other reviews seem unreasonable. Remember, Barcelona does not even get going until after 9pm. The streets were packed from the time we left in the evenings until we returned to the hotel usually after 1pm. We walked around the neighborhood and to the Metro stations without fear or incident. I subscribe to the fact that some of the "we did not feel safe" hysteria is attributable to the fact that a neighborhood of color lies between the hotel and La Rambla, adjacent to the Mercat de Sant Antoni metro station. The Gran Via, two blocks away in the opposite direction, is always busy, especially near the university and the Placa Catalunya. It seems improbable that anyone could be robbed with a weapon in broad daylight on a street with so much local foot traffic. It also seems improbable that one could denounce the hotel's location as "desolate" while complaining about street noise at night.

The neighborhood is an entertaining and exciting feature of the hotel. There are tons of things to do. We were surprised by the all the fascinating activity at the Mercat. Kids were in clusters trading sports and superhero cards; market vendors were selling cards, books, video games, toys. The food stalls in the market on the Ronda de Sant Antoni are interesting. There are many restaurants, boites, and shops in the area.

My only complaint is with the bed. I hate those pushed together Euro twin beds, and found the mattress harder than necessary. Nevertheless, I slept well enough to have had a great stay at the Market Hotel, and look forward to staying there again when we return to Barcelona in November.
