“Great value and location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2010

For a budget hotel, this ticked all the boxes providing excellent value for money. Situated just of the bottom end of the Rambla it is perfectly located in the Gothic part of the city, full of character and atmosphere, close to restaurants and the water front (which is stunning). Although we loved it, it is set in the less glamorous area. Our room (209) was spotlessly clean, good bathroom with fab shower, comfortable beds, fridge and free safe. Continental breakfast cost 5 eu which was adequate if a bit limited. Staff were helpful and offered us the use of a shower room on our last day after checking out at 12.00 midday. There was a bit of noise in the night but nothing to worry about and not in the league that some reviewers have mentioned. If you staying here, don’t bother with airport tranfers (we were quoted 140 Euros return). For 20 Euros we caught the airport bus which stops at the Placa Catalunya at the top of the Rambla and walked to the hotel - 20 minute stroll and thoroughly entertaining with all the street artists and stalls to take in. Top tip - if you have time buy a 2 day open top bus ticket which will take you all over Barcelona with guided tours. Cost 23 eu for 2 days but worth it. Overall we would recommend El Canton for a no frills Hotel and will stay again next time we go

The man that worked here at night came into our room with a baseball bat, and was very angry because of noise. the noise didn't even come from our room, but he blamed us... the rooms are small but it's nice enough to sleep in. the bathroom is too small. when you've got to go to the toilet, your knees wil touch the wall in front of you.

I didn't like this hotel!

This hotel is in a great location, easy walking distance to the surrounding old town, marina and not too far from the bus station & city park. Our room was spotlessly clean, the bed was fine. Didn't have breakfast, so can't comment on the food. There was a full size fridge in the wardrobe, so stock up if you will! There is a handy little shop a few door along anyway. The staff were nice, what little interaction we had with them. Downsides, there was some noise from outside and within the hotel. I'm a very light sleeper and conquered that easily with some earplugs. Slight drain smell from the bathroom which disappeared when the water was run.
It was £110 for two people for two nights. Great value and perfect if you're just looking for somewhere clean to lay your head.

This is a basic but clean hotel. The rooms are simply furnished and equiped to a decent standard. Its not luxury - its simple. If you just want a base from which to explore Barcelona and you're not bothered about having expensive extras you should stay here. The street on which the hotal is located is a bit drab and some people could see it as scary but its just a typical Barcelona back street.
The staff in the hotel are not the servile, crawlers you get in some of the bigger hotels - they are polite and reserved but friendly enough.
The optional breakfast is pretty poor and walking a few metres to a local bar/taverna would enable you to get freshly brewed coffee and superb pastries for less money that the hotel charges for its vending machine fayre.
All in all if you're looking for a cheap base in a great location then this hotel is worth a visit.

Hotel Canton is perfectly located. If you walk out the front door and turn left, you are on in the Borne area, which hosts small bars, cafes and restaurants within the narrow winding streets. Turn right and the beach, port promenade and the start of Las Ramblas is a 30 second walk. The nearest metro station is about 5 minutes walk which serves most of Barcelonas hot spots without having to change line. The rooms are basic, but excellent value for money for this location. Nearly all rooms have a TV, Air conditioning and a shower - but its best to check before you book.

The positive things are that the location is fairly good - short taxi ride to the pier (we went on a cruise), and just 2 short blocks from La Rambla, and the front desk manager is helpful and friendly. Was amusing that it is in what we would consider to be a narrow back lane. Even the taxi driver couldn't find it.

There were many negative things though:
- the bathroom smelled just horrible (bad sewer smell). So much that I had to hold my breath while using it and keep the door closed when we were in the room.
- the rooms are tiny - like a cruise ship stateroom
- still feels and looks like a hostel, not a hotel.

We are from Canada and just thought this was a bad place to stay. Luckily we were there only for one night.

This hotel I absolutely recommend. Good price, clean bathroom, good beds. Breakfast is simple, but enough. Staff is friendly and offers a good service. The location is great. Close to the Ramblas, close to the stop of the 'hop on hop off ' bus. Plaza Real is a nice area with good restaurants, also in walking distance.
We had a fantastic stay in Barcelona! Ineke, Rinie, Iris, Holland
