Found this little hotel (hostal isn't the same as a youth hostel) to be great value.
It's clean, very affordable (especially for a single room), and has a great location.
Had a very quiet room behind the reception, no noise.
Room size was quite small (to give you an idea, I added a photo of the room layout from the emergency exit slate. Bad quality picture I know, but you might get an idea of bed vs room size. Entrance is of hotel is on the left).
It's easy and quick to reach from the airport: there's a direct train from BCN airport to/from the Passeig de Gracia stop, which is too far from the hotel. The hotel itself it very close (1 or 2 minutes walk) to metro stop Diagonal.
Next to the hotel is a supermarket, which comes in handy.
Hotel has 24 hr reception.
If you're in BCN for a night out (after midnight), a big local bar/clubbing area is a 10 minute walk to the west, and relatively new one (Duvet) is at Diagonal metro stop even closer by.

Went off to Barca on my own for the 2007 MotoGP. As I prefer not to do the shared dorm experience unless forced to I had a bit of a browse at my favorite online booking site where this cheap gem came up. I had never heard of it before, but the review average was high and I knew the exact location, which was in my favourite neighbourhood Gracia, a non-touristy alternative artsy Barca area which has great shopping and eating.
The exact hostel location is great for transport too, 2 minute walk from Diagonal metro station and 7 minute walk to transport hub and direct airport and race circuit connection Passeig de Gracia.

Now Spanish hostels are nothing like dorm hostels as the English speaking world knows them. Usually they are small 1-2 star hotels that might have shared bathroom facilities.
Hostel HMB is no exception, it has 14 rooms, mostly doubles/twins with own facilities and two singles which have to share a shower.
It is on the first floor (2nd floor for the US folks) of an old building. The whole hostel has been renovated in 2006 and comes with 24hrs reception and a lift. Decoration is simple but efficient and aimed at keeping the warmth out.

I had the single without shower facing the street (I would prefer that to the single facing the entre-sol). It was not big (2.5 by 3 metres) but did come with a good comfortable 1.20 m wide bed, massive cupboard, flat screen telly and separate toilet and basin. My shared shower turned out to be a nice big bathroom which was to be shared with one other guest. No problems there. The whole place was spotless too!
The hostel has no breakfast (just a coffee machine) but has a supermarket and a fruit/corner shop on either side of it so no problems there. It is also within 5 minutes walking of two great plazas to have breakfast.

I didn't have any problems with this but I can imagine some people might have issues with the noise and Spanish-language only staff.
The windows keeps some of the noise out but not all. As you are staying in an urban area, there are bars around and the Spanish live at night (or at least till 1AM) so bring earplugs if you want an early night. Or even easier, just do as the Spaniards do and go to bed later. Also the hostel walls are not the thickest so again earplugs may come in handy if you get a noisy couple next to you.
And the very nice owner, tennis fan Toni, and his staff do not speak English! Communication is in Spanish and a bit of French. So brush up on your Spanish or bring a phrase book!

In short, if you want a simple but clean and well maintained place to stay in Barcelona, and don't mind staying just outside the centre, this is probably one of the cheapest good places you can find!
