“Not an ideal choice, but ok for short stay”
Reviewed April 11, 2010

Barcelona has many hostels that are great. This one was just tolerable. The rooms weren't the cleanest. They do have lockers and computers though. Wouldn't suggest paying over 20 to stay there.

we stayed in one of their apartments, further down the street from the actual hostel. it was a GREAT apartment w/ tv, fan and a kitchen. good size bathroom aswell.
we also had a french balcony overlooking the street. the street was filled with really small supermarkets and turist-shops. the first day we arrived we saw a huge fight from our balcony and when we got home one night there were gangs hanging out.

i would highly recommend the hostel, but be careful in this neighborhood!

This hostel was in a great location just off Las Ramblas. The room was very basic but OK, with a large locker in the room that's essentially free (EUR 2 deposit). The showers were pretty crap, with the hot water quite intermittent, and which also has an auto stop mechanism that stops way too soon. The free internet is a great benefit, the included breakfast is basic but better than nothing. Would stay here again if only for the central location.

I didnt book my stay i just went round barcelona and searched for the best hostal
as soon as i entered i was greeted by a realy friendly sweet woman and i immediately checked in
if you are snobby dont come here
but it was the best place i have ever stayed in and i have never felt more safe and met more friendly people
the beds are fine i really liked the breakfast and the showers were fine! the people who said all those horrible things obviously dont know what a hostal is!
how can you expect to have an imaculate shower if your sharing it with anothe 30 people
anyway im definatly going back ther !

  • Liked — the atmosphere and people
  • Disliked — mayb some of the people i had to share a room with but they were mainly nice and thats not he hostels fault

Well, I wasn't expecting much, having read many of the reviews on the YHA Website, I knew I was pretty much booking into a flop house.. This is not because it's a "backpackers-only" type place. You don' t see too many backpackers there, mostly you see young people who got too drunk on las ramblas and couldn't get home at night, so needed a place to crash.

I've stayed in many youth hostels around the world, many with much lower YHA ratings than this one has.... and this is probably the most grim.

It wasn't dirty per se - but I didn't use the showers as I didn't bring flip-flops and I was concerned that they hadn't been sanitised properly in a while.

The rooms are tiny, with low ceilings, very little ventilation, and not much space between beds. They are poorly lit, and grey, and not at all appealing. I was there in Nov, so it wasn't too hot - but this must be a nightmare in the summer. There are no small lights by the beds, so if you come in late, you must turn on the big flourescent lights to find your bed, and thus wake everybody in the room up.

The beds are clean, they are entirely plastic coated. LOUD plastic (particularly the pillows) - I ended up using my jumper as a pillow because everytime I moved my head - even slightly - the noise of crinkling plastic woke me up. I was suspicious of the blankets, but the linnen was clean.

DON'T EAT THE "BREAKFAST" - yes.. it's included in the 19euros you pay to sleep there - but it's SO TERRIBLE. You get corn flakes, and dried melba-toast type stuff from a packet with a bit of jam. There is "coffee" - but the coffee comes from the kind of machine that mixes it out of concentrated coffee syrup - it's a bad mix.. it tastes like bad chemicals, would probably take the varnish off your nails - it's really horrible.. The juice is also made from concentrated juice-like syrup - and probably has no real fruit in it. it's so chemically tasting I couldn't finish. it. Why they couldn't bother to buy a bag of apples, or a loaf of bread and jam.. it's the WORST EVER...

surprisingly, they seem to hire 2 staff for breakfast service - their job? to continuously replenish the vat of cornflakes.

There are REAL, PROPER alternatives to this brekkie - about 1 second outside the front door there is a coffee/juice/croissant type-place that is both cheap and tasty. and about 5 minutes away (on the Ramblas) there is a HUGE Food market that has all the nicest bread, cheese, fruit, meats, etc.. you could ever want.

Regardless of all the wonderful ammenities listed on the YHA site for this hostel.. it is really very very basic - the computers don't work, there is a single filthy microwave and fridge which they call a "members kitchen". This is nothing more than a place to crash, and not as nice as most, - Bring ear plugs and flip flops.

A good thing? - yes.. there was. I checked out before 11pm, but wasn't leaving till 5 - and for only 2 euros I was able to store my luggage in their locked room all day long. Of course the down side to this was, although my bag was numbered - and I was given a cooresponding number.. when it came time to collect my bag, I was simply given the key for the room and not asked to see my number at all - I could have taken any bag - I might not even have been a resident of the hostel - nobody would have cared or checked.

My friend and I stayed in a 10bed mix dorm for 3 nights in Septemeber 2007. The room itself wasn't too bad - true backpacker style though - just a place to sleep. There were large lockers available for your things - 2euro cost, but you got the money back at the end.
The shared bathroom facilities weren't too bad - could have been a little cleaner, but were pretty good.
Breakfast each morning was very basic - however with so many people staying in this place I guess it's to be expected.
24hr reception was good - allowed us to check-out very early in the morning so we could make our early flight.
Free internet access was very useful!

Location was excellent - 15min walk to the harbour. 10min walk to La Cathedral. Public transport near by - metro on Ramblas - 5min walk.

Downsides of this place - it was a bit noisy at times at night as there is an eating place on the corner next to the hostel. Also it is not located right on Ramblas as the details sometimes say - you must walk about 5mins down a street off Ramblas - still a very good position though.

This place was still good value for money - if you are a backpacker or trying to budget your holiday and only need a place to sleep - this is great!
