The expectations were high, a big dissapointment. The place was uncomfortable. The staff was fairly cold and service was somewhat slow. The food was not as good as expected. If you want excellent food that matches the pricetag, this is not the place.

“Don't waste your time here! Take your business to one of the other hundreds of excellent restaurants in Barca”
Reviewed April 12, 2014

After reading the reviews on TripAdvisor and seeing that this place ranked #2, we were quite excited to even get a reservation. We love sushi and were looking for a temporary break from Spanish cuisine on our vacation. However, it was not a good experience. The food was average, the service was terrible, and we were over charged on our bill on food that is already overly expensive. When the waitress couldn't get us to give her our order after asking five times within ten minutes of us sitting down, the manager came over and made it clear it was time to order. While this was annoying we were willing to let it go since the place is so busy. The items arrived one at a time in a strange order (appetizer towards the end). The sushi was fishy tasting and room temperature. The sushi rolls were the same and unremarkable. While the decor was probably at one time sleek and modern Asian inspired, it now seems tired with scratches in the paint in places. When we found we were missing an item we had ordered, we asked the waitress about it. She then brought it over a while later and added it twice to our bill. The atmosphere is busy, but not in a good way. It is clear this place was in overt their head the night we were there. When they ran our credit card, I was not given the choice of whether to run in in Euro or Dollars. This simply sealed the deal to me that everything about this place is set to take advantage of tourists, especially "stupid" Americans who don't know any better. This meal was one huge black mark on an otherwise wonderful trip. I hate to only write a review when I am unhappy, but I feel it is important to let people know of the bad experiences so these places can be avoided. It is just that there are so many excellent restaurants in Barcelona (including many others serving Japanese/Sushi) run by nice people who appreciate your business. Take you patronage there.

“Sushi Sensation”
Reviewed April 3, 2014

After reading previous reviews, I decided to make this the destinatiom for my partners birthday meal whilst in Barcelona - we're both Japanese cuisene lovers! It was an excellent meal, sushi and fish very fresh and delicately prepared! We ordered the California Roll and Tempura Prawn - both equally delicious. The vegetable tempura was the best i've had...a pile of thinny sliced veg in a very light coating. The gyoza and spicy edemame beans were also amazing and very tasty. The mini burger and chicken tempura were also nice, but over shadowed by the others. The style of Umo is very modern and quirky, but comfortable and private too. For anyone visitng Barcelona I would say a trip here is a must, it opens 1-4 and 8-midnight for the full menu. Thanks for a lovely meal Umo!!!

“Fantastic Japanese meal...”
Reviewed April 3, 2014 via mobile

Visited here whilst on a short break to Barcelona.

The staff were pleasant and attentive, surroundings very modern, but the real star is the food.

The menu is varied and has a lot to choose from...Classic Japanese dishes and sushi as well as a few more unusual options.

The California Maki was sensational, crab with avacado and some roe, just the right size and the rice was perfect (as was the prawn tempura roll).

The vegetable tempura was unlike tempura I've had anywhere else, highly recommended, as are the spiced edamame beans.

Extra credit for the unsual menu options like mini wagyu burger with rice.

Overall, this place is a must visit if you are a sushi fan, even if you're not there's plenty to be had.
