“Good service, but a way too small rooms”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2013

The staff was very attentive, flexible and kind. Location was good.
But the room was so small, especially the bed, that my husband and I had troubles to sleep.
The room had a good shower, but the windows faced the inner part of the building, so all the noise from the lobby would come up any time of the night!

We were a little doubtful about this place because of some of the negative reviews on here. I think some people must have stayed in a different hotel because they bear no relation to our experience.
The location is very convenient for the airport and tour buses. The neighbourhood's fine (on the cusp between the middle class Eixample and the working class Raval districts) and the rooms are simple but clean.
Good and plentiful buffet breakfast and the reception staff couldn't have been more helpful.
My only quibble was the feeble aircon in the room. Not a problem in June but could be in August.

This hotel is in the right location to be able to walk to most attractions i.e. Placa de Catalunya (where the city tour buses start from), Las Ramblas, Catedral, Placa d'Espanya and also has good metro connections nearby. Aerobus from airport drops you off in the Placa de la Universitat, a short walk to the hotel ( you have to walk to Placa de Catalunya if you want the Areobus back to the airport)

The rooms were clean and the staff friendly and helpful. You can hear the metro late into the night/early morning but only for the first day after that it becomes part of the environment.

We didn't book for breakfast as there are plenty of bakeries selling pastries (delicious) and coffee around the hotel. Also good choice of restaurants for dinner in the evening.

We would recommend this hotel - good value and being outside the tourist 'trap' it is definitely worth the money.

Room Tip: We were in Room 501 which overlooked the street and had a small balcony. Lovely to listen to the pas...

A beautifully clean and modern hotel in a very central but quiet position, the rooms were roomy and spotless, the reception staff were just lovely, very helpful nothing was too much trouble for them. Great breakfast with a very good choice.
My only gripe was the underground passing by at all hours, but after the first night I sort of could not hear it! would visit again.

We booked the Hotel Gran Ronda because of it's easy on the pocket room rate . This what we've found : Good location . Hearty breakfast . Friendly & helpful staff . Clean & almost soundproof rooms . It's not the Ritz - but hey - who needs the Ritz when Gran Ronda can be your home in BCN !!!!!!
We'll sure be back !!

Well located. Large high ceilinged rooms with double doors leading onto street facing balcony. Staff very friendly and service orientated. If you are a tourist who needs a pleasant place to rest your weary feet - this the place. Did not sign up for breakfast. Plenty of restaurants and bars around and situated just outside the tourist trap zone so again good value to be obtained.

I don't know why it is that outside of London everyone seems to expect 5* accommodation at 2* prices, but I think with this hotel you actually get more than what you pay for. I booked a trip via Expedia - 3 nights at Hotel Gran Ronda + BA flights for £255. An absolute bargain in anyone's eyes. I've stayed in pits in Amsterdam for package deals that cost more than that.

It cost about 25 euros to get from the airport to the hotel, which is central enough to be within walking distance of almost anything you want to see. It's a 10 minute walk into La Rambla though all those immaculate stunning alleys and passageways, or a 20 minute walk south down to the beach. Up into Eixample is also only a 15-20 minute walk. The buildings and the vibe are so engrossing that I found I was pretty happy to walk most places (except for La Sagrada Familia which I got a tour bus to, but did walk back from).

Anyhow, on first impressions the hotel looks good. Very friendly reception staff - offering useful advice - and a stunning glass lift at the end of the reception area. Nothing to complain about here. The bedroom also strikes you immediately as being in good condition. Maybe a little worn around the edges, and some people won't like the views of washing hanging from people's balconies, but for me that made me feel like I was a part of it all.

Some people have complained about the beds. No doubt, the mattress is firm, but that suits me fine. The shower is powerful and immediately hot - and that can't be undervalued as a bonus in any hotel! The bathroom is spacious.

Having stayed there for 3 nights I'd say there are some small things that are not game-changers, but they could increase the experience quite a lot as a customer. These would be:

Larger towels: you're assigned 2 hand towels and 2 body towels between 2 of you, but really the larger towels (though perfectly absorbent) were still quite small compared to other places I've stayed (more like large hand towels);
Storage: there is a wardrobe with plenty of shelving (and a working safe) but only about 6 hangers between 2 of you. If this is important, bring some hangers!
Mirrors: unlike anywhere I've ever stayed there is no mirror in the bedroom - only the bathroom. So you end up fighting for it a bit. They'd not do bad to put another mirror in the bedroom;
Air Con: it was a warm weekend and try as it might the air con didn't make any difference. We slept with the window open and that was fine, but those wanting a chilly room will be out of luck;
Bedding: bedding is continental style thin blanket with sheet. There was another thicker blanket in the cupboard. As a Brit I appreciate a thick duvet even in summer, so if this matters to you you'll have to lump it!
Room card: you're only given 1, well we were. We didn't ask for a second one, but we are used to being given 1 each. Not a complaint just an observation.

I found the hotel quiet enough in general but if you stay in room 307 you'll be next to a staff office, and they bang their door in the early hours. Don't stay in 307. Either that or drink enough that you don't care.

The hotel staff were very happy to store my bags for quite a few hours on my last day, and provide all help when needed.

Overall I'd say for what this hotel charges - £60 per night between 2 on Expedia (probably cheaper other places) - and considering the location this is very very good value. It's not 4* or 5* but it's not going to be for £30 per night each. It's far superior to any hostel though, and it feels like a proper hotel, as it should. If you can put up with the niggles I've mentioned earlier I'd go for it as a safe option.

Room Tip: Avoid room 307. I'd assume that the higher you are, the quieter it is.
