We had a great time in this hotel in barcelona,we found the location was perfect, very convenient to a lot of the sights,a 10 minute walk to the nearest metro, and enough going on in the surrounding area to have a good evening out without worrying about getting back to the hotel. The hotel staff were excellent, friendly and helpful, the rooms were nice and bright, and i would recommend getting a room with a balcony overlooking the street, great for early morning and evening people watching with the free coffee and biscuits provided by the hotel. The 'Cal Brut' bar 100 metres along the street was a nice spot for a beer or three,Also, the 'pulperia' on the corner by the hotel has the best 'Pulpo',and the best patatas bravas we had in barcelona...

When we return to barcelona,we will definitely stay here again.

We stayed here 2 nights before taking the train to Valencia and Tarragona.
The first impressions were very favourable, a very helpful and charming man on reception, qualities maintained throughout. You very quickly realise this is very much for the young or young in heart. Those with a back-packing background will think they've died and gone to heaven.
The common area was delightful: reading material, guide books, and complimentary soft drinks and hot beverages ( a Nespresso machine no less) - a lovely touch. Although ceilings are high, there is a permanent dimness inside because of the quirky drapes and spectacular but ineffectual lighting, particularly in the bedroom. After 2 nights we frankly found that we were on our limits of patience because of the impracticalities: limited open hanging space on a metal rail, drawers non-existent apart from a small ( Ikea ?) plastic box; no bedside tables only firm pouffes; tv needed a technical degree to operate because of the multiple control handsets; absence anywhere of instructions for anything, and the extravagant lighting which even on max only half lit the room ( my bedside light wasn't working).
But the worst was the shower, which was powerful but leaked through the glass doors onto the wooden boards below.
I admit to a special interest here. There is no bathroom my wife hasn't flooded. Before she retired she was employed by the Royal Navy to identify leaks in submarines, so this shower was easy-peasy for her. After she'd showered it was like stepping down into a swimming pool. But for once I can't blame her. I did exactly the same, even stuffing the gaps with towels. The plumbing really is eccentric - the washbowl hot water was never more than the merest trickle.
The hotel really is a triumph of design over practicality. One reviewer said it was the best hotel he had ever stayed in; another that it was the worst, and I can sympathise with both points of view. I'm glad we stayed here; it was a pleasant and memorable experience which I would recommend to certain people I know would love it. I also have a great deal of goodwill to the owners because it is not expensive for Barcelona and they are generous in their attitude to their guests. But personally we wouldn't stay here again; we like conventional, well-lit hotels with everything to hand.

Room Tip: Ask for one away from the common room area.

Really well located for exploring the old town and in fact the whole city, as you have a couple of different metro lines within a short walk. The staff were really friendly and we really liked all the quirky little touches and the atmosphere of the hotel. The public area has free wifi, free coffee/tea/water and this was a nice touch. There are lots of places to eat within a short walk from the hotel (my other reviews mention one to avoid at all costs and one to definitely try!).

The only complaint I would have is that I was woken up throughout the night by people walking up and down the corridor to their rooms. People weren't being noisy or even talking, it was just that the corridor floor was really loud to walk on and the doors to the bedrooms did nothing to block the sound out. This probably won't bother you unless you are a light sleeper... Having said that, this is really just a small negative and I would definitely stay here again despite this.

Hotel is very convenient and is in a good location. Staff, including cleaning people, were wonderful and very helpful. My concern and I have seen it in other reviews is the steps from the bed area to the toilet area. You enter the room on one level, and wash area and toilet are on a different level. In our case it was two steps down with no railing. Floors are very dark brown. With the lights out, this can be a disaster. During the night,we had to leave the lights on in the toilet and a white towel on the step to make sure that we can see the step. Getting out of the shower there was only a little bit of space to exit before going down the stairs. Shower surface in front of the stairs was also slick. Bed was in front of a mantle. This was a little difficult to sit up in bed to read as the mantle sticks in the back of your neck. Closet space were a clothing rack and two plastic boxes which fell on the floor if you yanked them open. Main concern from reading reviews was eased. The toilet is enclosed and not visible. Shower is very visible and could be interesting for newly weds as it is viewable all parts of the room and totally transparent. There is a ceiling to floor curtain to block the view from the bed. Window view was an air shaft which was ok, as it was very quiet except for slamming doors in the night. Beads and colored lights in the hall is interesting, but I think unnecessary in front of the elevator. Free coffee and water is great. We asked about the steps in the room and were told that this was in all the rooms. This is an interesting place. Material was topnotch and there were design considerations. Kind of fascinating, but not really setup for a hotel room. I liked the staircase down to the reception with a light like falling water going down the middle. I am reluctant to write this, as I really liked the staff and the location.

I am sorry to hear that you had some problems with the steps in our rooms.
The building is from 1888 and it was before a small palace and then a school and from there it was transformed to a hotel. The reason of the step is that we had to lift up the floor, for the tubes and pipes, for the shower.
We hope we can welcome you again in one of our other chic&basic.

I loved this hotel. It's quirky, spacious, grand but somehow intimate. The staff went above and beyondfor the guests, their service was one of the best I've had.
I loved the public areas, you can help yourself to amazing coffee, bottled water, and they even have a vending machine If you fancy a bottle or champagne or wine.

Quirky, clean, comfortable designer non-budget hotel in good position for old city. We paid c£110 per night for large room with balcony. Worth it. Friendly, helpful, English-speaking young staff. No restaurant but plenty of bars, cafes, restaurants (and the excellent Chocolate museum cafe) nearby. Free access to good range of coffees, teas and biscuits and internet in modernistic lounge. Good unobtrusive airconditioning in variably lit rooms. Comfortable, firm, double bed with good reading lights. Uncomplicated, efficient plumbing with integrated, visible, multi-lit shower (not for those shy of showering in view of room-mate).Small lift but rooms might be difficult for elderly and infirm given pooled lighting and internal steps. Only problem was an over-heavy, large window blind which jammed and remained unrepaired during our 3 night stay. Would stay there again.
