“Hide and seek hotel”
Reviewed June 4, 2012

I chose this hotel, because it is near to the airport and as we were flying home the next day after an exclusive boat cruise, I thought this hotel was ideal to end our holiday. Taxi fair from the port to the hotel was 35 Euros.
It is located in a residential area and even with a GPS and the correct address, our taxi driver could not find it. He had to stop to ask for directions from some locals.
It is a very quiet hotel right on the beach and we had a room with a beautiful sea view.
The room was very modern and well equipped. The beds were extremely comfortable and the bathroom was very beautiful.
The restaurant menu was very limited as well as the service and when we decided to splurge for our last evening on holiday, we could only find one decent restaurant nearby.
Barcelona is about 45 min with a bus from this hotel and about 10 minutes drive by taxi to the airport. The taxi trip to the airport was 20 Euros.
We did not have breakfast - too expensive for South Africans.
Measured against South African 4-star hotels, this is a worthy hotel!

I recently stayed at this hotel and read many of the reviews listed here. My family and I were excited for the trip. Sadly, we were very dissapointed.
First, this hotel is almost impossible to find. You will be lucky if your taxi driver has been there before and can navigate the roads. Not to mention the cabs at the airport have a "minimum fare" and while this hotel was only supposed to be 13 Euro, we were charged 20.
It is VERY far from the city of Barcelona, which we were not told by the hotel staff. It was 60 Euro roundtrip (about 30-35 min each way) to/from La Rambla.
Our TV did not work and nobody came to fix it.
They advertise a fitness center but its actually a deal the hotel has with the gym across the street, which was closed when we arrived.
The rooms are VERY small and the beds are very uncomfortable.
We were provided 1 internet code, despite being a platinum member (supposed to receive free internet) and told only 1 person could use the internet at a time.
Another perk of being platinum with Marriott is the free breakfast, however this hotel does not honor that.
The walls are so thin it sounds as if the people in the hall way are in your room.
There is absolutely nothing around the hotel, so do not plan on eating out.
I cannot think of a reason to stay at this hotel unless you plan on never leaving the premises.

Gava Mar is, as others have said, outside of Barcelona but convenient to the airport. Others have said it is on the beach/by the sea, but let me emphasize what that really means. This hotel is on the beach and the beach is not like the typical small, rocky European beach. It is a broad sand beach with a lovely Strand/walking path and bike path. There is a great pool which felt wonderful after spending 4 unusually hot days in Sevilla. I was so happy to be at this hotel on my last night in Spain. We had started our vaca in Barcelona so didn't feel the need to be in the heart of the city on our last night. We were surprised to hear more than one group of people complaining about the location. Know when you book that the hotel is on the other side of the airport, not between the airport and Barcelona proper. This is NOT the place to stay if you want to visit the sites in Barcelona. But if you are looking for a nice detox at the end of the vacation, this is the place for you. We were also a bit tired of the either bland or too salty Spanish food after 17 days, so thoroughly enjoyed our pleasant walk down the Strand then into the town a bit to find a delicious crepe shop for an afternoon snack. And for dinner, there is a beach bar/restaurant right where the hotel walkway takes you to the Strand, so a 3 minute walk, and we had a really yummy fajita meat taco and chips and guacamole. The room itself was modern if not a bit small, but adequately appointed. The hairdryer was pleasant to use as it stayed on continuously (as opposed to so many european hotel hair dryers that require you to push a button every time to get air). The TV service was awful - every channel was fuzzy and the options were limited. And true, there's no good wifi in the room (but free in a spacious lobby working area).

Gava Mar is a wonderful hotel away from the city lights of Barcelona where one can relax and enjoy a peaceful stay.

The hotel is modern where one can relax and enjoy a cocktail by the poolside or enjoy the surf of the beach which is 50 meters away from the pool.

Although the staff is professional they are quite distant with regards to American staff. One must continue asking questions in order to find out more about the area or things to do around Gava Mar. There isn't much to do unless, you are into running, exercising and enjoying a peaceful weekend or for a special event then it is ideal.

The rooms are average size but convenient and have a wonderful view of the vast park and poolside as well as the sea. My idea of staying at a hotel is convenience so Gava Mar is a place that I recommend.

Nevertheless, it does have its inconveniences such as boisterous children who are accompanied by families during the high season. Unfortunately, they are not well versed in being in a public atmosphere where they scream around the poolside or dive in the pool with such vigor that many times I left to the beach for rest and relaxation.

I highly recommend that they have a person survey this area since it is important to have a peaceful stay. Also, they should clean the poolside area more often as it tends to become less attractive when guests leave their towels, newspapers, ashtrays around.

The reception area is quite large with a wide screen television and seating to watch the news or football matches. Also, they have WIFI so its better to work there than in your room as its spacious and people rarely go there.

The restaurant is nothing to rave about since we had dinner there once... it was disappointing. its better to go across the street to the famous tapas restaurant a few hundred meters away to the right of the hotel. The breakfast room is small but one can find a buffet style breakfast with everything so that is a plus. Again, if you want scrambled eggs, you must ask for it. It's a bit noisy since it has a combination of family/convention/couples as guests so either get up very early or very late to avoid the rush and noise.

Overall:

Rooms: Clean and practical
Minibar: free orange juice, bottled water and coke/beer...great!
Bath/toilet: clean and spacious
Spa/gym: one must go to a facility that the hotel recommends that isn't too far off but its quite busy. The hotel should build one on its vast property for its guests.
Pool: good size but should build a children or family pool on the opposite side of the park.
Price: between €230-350 for a night which is pricey outside of Barcelona
Restaurant: I recommend eating out
Breakfast: €15 (all you can eat) buffet, a bit pricey for Spain.
Location: near the airport but in a peaceful residential area
Staff: Professional but need to be more friendly towards guests
Recommendation: Have the staff survey the noise (noisy children), which is impossible.

Anecdote: Gava Mar is an exclusive residential area where television hosts and football stars have a secondary home (near the airport).

Its a nice place and will continue to frequent Gava Mar!

Room Tip: All rooms face the sea, however, ask for a room on the upper floor to get a great view!

The hotel is very nice with modern style rooms. I got a room with a front sea view and it was very nice. The room itself was very nice furbished with all needed equipments. The hotel overall is very nice and modern as well. The buffet breakfast was not that big but sufficient and good. Unfortunately, and due to the season, I couldn't profit from the beach which is couple of feet from the hotel. Finally, it is +/- 20 minutes from Barcelona dowtown. Worth to stay.

I was staying here on business for 2 nights and is around 12km from Barcelona and therefore you don't pay the premium prices for central Barcelona if you don't mind the travel into the city. I was here in November so didn't take advantage of the beach or the swimming pool but I would imagine that it would be lovely in summer. Rooms are modern and all usual facilities and includes free mini bar with soft drinks and a couple of bottles of beer which is a nice touch not to have to pay for water and orange juice etc.Breakfast is continental with no hot food but offers ham, bread rolls, croissants, cakes and fresh fruit but I felt to be a few euros overpriced at 16 euros. The hotel is in a residential area and I agree with another reviewer that useful to have the address to give to the taxi driver.
I would recommend this hotel if happy to stay out of town
