“Excellent Hotel, the pool on the roof is an Oasis”
Reviewed September 5, 2006

This hotel is amazing. I would and have recommended it to anyone. The pool on the roof in summer time is an Oasis and considering where the hotel is based it is a quiet and private.

We stayed for one week in this Hotel. And it was great. There was absolutely nothing I could complain about. The service was excellent. The room service was top. It is a quiet place although it is in the heart of Barcelona. There is a pool ,a sauna and sports area. And everything is included. The breaktast is perfect. My recommandation: If you want to see Barcelona and want to relax: Stay there!!!

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at Hotel 1898 and have to say that the hotel lived up to all of our expectations after reading the reviews.
It was most definitely more 5 star than 4 star with the rooftop pool and day beds being a very luxurious feature and the views from there- WOW! and at 165euros a night was a bargain!
The room was spacious ( we stayed in room 308) and although a little dark ( it being a coutyard view room) it was very quiet and pleasant- peace and tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of the Ramblas.
The bathroom was fabulous with a great shower ( the biggest shower head I have ever seen) and plenty of towels, bathrobes, slippers and complementary toiletries.
The bed was huge and comfortable and the different lighting very relaxing after a hard days sightseeing, eating and drinking.
The only criticism I have is that we requested an iron but were advised that they only offer a laundry service.
The indoor pool, gym and steam room/sauna were more than adequate.
We chose not to eat in the hotel instead opting for the many resaurants/ Tapas bars and market nearby.
Breakfast - the market for its choice of fresh fruit and a very handy starbucks next door.
Dinner- Dont eat til late -10pm earliest. We tried many restauarants but one of our favourites was 'set portes- passeig d'isabel ll 14'. Its been there since 1836 and has queues out the door so you have to book. The paella was delicious.
Will definitely stay again at the 1898 - a real treat!

My wife and I stayed 2 nights in early August following Trip Advisor recommendations and were not disappointed. The location could not be better and although we arrived late in the evening, it was service with a smile. Our standard room was not large, but provided the peaceful rest we were looking for. Breakfast was very adequate and many ate in the restaurant in the evening as the outside restaurants were very congested and busy. The hotel is basically new and oozes charm and atmosphere, The features which make this establishment stand out include ; the silent Charlie Chaplin movies showing in the foyer which make this area a calm oasis from the busy world outside; the fantastic roof top pool and lounge area and the modern ( although somewhat dark) decor of the interior. A great deal of planning has gone into the design and development of Hotel 1898 and all concerned should be congratulated . The staff were very attentive and helpful. Thank you all for a great experience!

Just came back from 4 nights at 1898 with my girlfriend and got to say we were both very impressed.
Stayed all over the world but the difference in this hotel is it's ability at key times to take you away completely from the bustle and noise of its central city location.
Our room was third floor and had a balcony with side view of Ramblas which was fantastic for early evening atmosphere however has completely soundproof when it was time to call it a night.
One thing though - we requested king bed and got twin beds which led to some interesting complications.
Roof top area had a tranquil, relaxation feeling and the lift took you straight from there into the basement " cavern" spa area and gym which again was faultless.

Would recommend this hotel to anyone - can't wait to go back to Barcelona to stay there!

Didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment on food, however ate in El Gran Cafe in the Gothic area ( great atmosphere and food ) , Los Caracoles ( a favourite apparently - great but very busy - be prepared to " mix it up a bit " ) and Cal Pinxo Palau de Mar in the harbour ( very romantic but the most stuck up waitresses ever encountered ! )

Stayed Aug 11-13 2006. My Boyfriend and I love 5 star and this Hotel impressed in every facet. Go for the Premier room - ask for 601 this room was fantastic. Great Decor, everything is in top condition and the hotel could not be in a better location right in the middle of everything and 1 minute walk to the metro. The underground pool was beautiful and the top deck lounges were great too. The staff were the friendliest I found - David and Martha were outstanding in assisting with every tip and location. 10 out of 10 for this joint.

As per so many of the reviews - great locaton (3 euros on the airport bus and a short walk down the Ramblas is even easier than a taxi) but a haven of peace and calm compared to the fun and craziness of the day and night entertainment outside the front door.
The cooling pool (towels provided) and deck showers on the rooftop were very welcome, with superb comfort provides by daybeds and plenty of cusions - the views across Barcelona to the sea were a real treat. We did not have breakfast in our package so avoided 18 euros and went to Starbucks right next to the lobby.
Loved the room, the pillow menu, the very comfy bed, and the calming lighting! Spotless bathroom with great shower.
Modern decor throughout. As great fans of the UK boutique hotel group Hotel Du Vin we are delighted to find a similar level of style and comfort in our favourite short break city. Every trip for us includes a lunchtime visit to the Mercato - a feast of produce that has to be seen and enjoyed!
If room mini bar prices put you off drinking the amount of water etc you should do to remain headache free in a hot country there is a supermarket just a few yards up the road (left out of front door).
The staff were polite, although not overly warm. One of the young barman at the rooftop bar was very helpful and pleasant every afternoon and evening.

  • Liked — great rooms, great location, stylish decor, lovely rooftop pool area - very comfortable
  • Disliked — high price bar
  • Tips/Secrets — remember lobby Starbucks if you want to avoid breakfast bill
