“Sumptuous and stylish”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2014

We arrived in Barcelona having spent a week in Valencia, where we got rather used to a 5 star hotel life! Very happily for us, Hotel 1898 very much maintained this level and the life to which we had quickly grown accustomed!

The hotel oozes style, with the lobby decorated in sumptuous shades of black and grey. Our rooms was lovely, very comfortable, stylish with impressive mod-cons. It wasn't that big, but plenty big enough for our needs. Street noise from Las Ramblas and nearby bars might be a problem for some - we were on the third floor and could hear noise late at night. A pair of ear plugs would take care of that though if you felt that would be an issue.

You should not visit this hotel without checking out both the roof terrace and the underground pool. The latter is sublime! It's the perfect place to go and cool down and chill out at the end of a long, hot day before going out for the night. The former, provides stunning views of Barcelona, a very inviting rooftop pool and a bar/restaurant. We didn't partake of any food as we wanted to explore further afield, but cocktails in the evening will be a happy memory for a long time.

I already loved this hotel, but they blew me away when we returned to the room on our last evening in the hotel - they had discovered that it was my husband's birthday (presumably from his passport at check-in) and had delivered a happy birthday note, bottle of Cava and 2 flutes to the room - absolutely fantastic. What a wonderful touch. Thank you so much to the H1898 staff for that amazing gesture.

This was a wonderful place to stay for our time in Barcelona and I would highly recommend it.

Very stylish hotel. Loved the decor. We were 'upgraded' when we were checked in. The room was great but tbh I wasn't blown away by the upgrade. Location of room was good though, just 1 floor down from the magnificent roof terrace. This outside space is what made the hotel for us as we didn't eat here (breakfast was too expensive) & we didn't take advantage of the spa.
Great location, easy to find & of course very central to some great restaurants.
Loved Barcelona & will definitely be back. Would we stay here again? Of course!

We've been here about 4 times and it continues to be great.

It used to be an old cigar factory so the building itself is quite grand and the decor is stylish, simple and cocooning. The spa downstairs is very relaxing with a lovely heated pool in a vault.

Desk staff (especially Edurne) are lovely and helpful.

Breakfast fantastic - lots of fresh fruit, unlimited cava and meats as well as eggs etc - you can also eat on the Isabella Terrace. Anna and Resa at breakfast are both charming.

The real winner here is the terrace - have a chilli mojito on the roof and relax in a cabana. Isabel at the bar is great. The pool is small but it really doesn't matter - most people don't come to Barcelona to do laps on the roof. The only thing to watch out for is cheeky people trying to come up and use the pool from the street . They can come to the bar but pool is residents only.

Terrace views are great - it's 360 degrees so you can see the sea. Montjuic and the castle and Tibidabo.

Being so central is a major plus - whilst La Rambla is a nightmare you are so close to La Boqueria the amazing food market plus The Raval which is full of great independent bars and restaurants.

I doubt anyone would regret their time here, its a stunning hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room higher up - floor 5 perhaps.

Hotel 1898 was the perfect melange of hip and gracious. The rooms were perfectly appointed and decorated beautifully. The bathrooms were generous in space and amenities. The roof bar was the perfect oasis after a busy day in Barcelona. The staff is friendly and professional and the view is magnificent. Our lunches on the roof were delicious.
The hotel is perfectly situated on the Rambla, close to many wonderful neighborhood restaurants, excellent shopping and points of interest. My stay there was delightful in every way and I highly recommend it to anyone planning to visit Barcelona

We liked this hotel and would stay again. Room was on th small side but very well appointed. Staff was professional and courteous. Concierge was excellent. Ask for a room on a higher floor facing back of church where it is quiet. Good value - we hook the "gastronomy package," and were glad did.
