So happy with our stay at H1898. Great location, friendly staff and the roof top pool is bliss. Others have complained of street noise but we didn't hear a thing! We were on the 4th floor facing the courtyard. Staff were so helpful, printing directions to places and bars we wanted to go to. The only downside was the price of drinks and snacks on the terrace. Really expensive and had they had been just a bit more reasonable we would have eaten and drank there more. Overall a very good experience.

We found the 1898 to be expensive but worth it. Chosen for its location and reviews on T.A., I do not regret it. The room was good, quiet, the bed, bathroom, toiletries etc. was as I expected for a hotel of this level. A good feature was the roof top terrace, in a city as Barcelona it is good to have a "breather". We had no problems with the Wi-Fi and found the staff to be very helpful in their various recommendations. Attention should be given to the breakfast, try it only if you enjoy a long breakfast, although expensive it has everything needed including a very good selection of Spanish delicacies.
Not the best hotel I have stayed in, but neither do I have any reasons for not recommending it. The hotels location makes it a good base for enjoying Barcelona.

What makes this property on everyone’s swanky list is the location right off La Rambla and the amazing roof top pool and bar. The service was consistently strong, too. However, the rooms are small for the price and ridiculously noisy. You will see that noise is the consistent complaint from TA reviews, a lot of it attributed to being in the heavily touristy area. However, I don't believe it has to do with the outside at all but poor construction. I am not talking about thin walls were you can hear loud noises from your neighbors. I am talking about hearing everything that happens up and down the halls, noises from above, noises from below, your neighbor in the room across the hall talking in a normal voice, etc. I can’t remember being in any hotel with such a problem much less a supposed five star. It looks like the property put their money into being swank and not in basic building materials. Stay elsewhere but have cocktails on the rooftop bar.

We only had two nights to stay in Barcelona, but wish we could have stayed longer. In particular, we very much enjoyed the rooftop deck as well as the spa in what my husband called 'the grotto'. My only complaint about the spa was that the cold water shower was not cold enough.

Our room was NOT on Ramblas and on the 5th floor, so noise was not a problem, though we were prepared for it to be.

The breakfast on the rooftop was good, though spendy. You're paying for the location and view, definitely NOT the coffee. Go downstairs for a good cafe.

We just spent a night there on Friday, August 9 th. We will definitely be back. The service was excellent, especially at the front desk. The roof top lounge was a wonderful retreat. Room was very well- appointed, modern and very quiet. It opened up to a great, private courtyard away from the street. The morning breakfast buffet and ambience was excellent.

My daughter and I recently spent 5 nights at Hotel 1898 and were surprised and disappointed at the snide attitude and poor service from the front desk "concierges". The hotel is beautifully appointed and centrally located, but when one is spending upwards of $500/night some basic level of concierge service is expected. After a sleepless night due to loud noises from the street below, we asked if the hotel was not full if we could change rooms to one further from La Rambla. We were told that we should have expected noise, because after all, we were staying in a city. On our second day we asked at the front desk if anyone could make reservations for us at a local restaurant that had been recommended. Reservations were made, but for the wrong night. The only other help we asked for was in making train reservations to San Sebastian. The hotel supposedly has Wifi, but access was very spotty. We were directed to the business center on the 1st floor and given the train website. After 3 frustrating hours we came back downstairs where a new clerk was on call who explained to us that the train company does not accept international credit cards. By the time we got to a travel agency, the train had been fully booked and we had to spend a lot of extra money in order to fly to San Sebastian.
I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone. Surely for the price a quieter and more accommodating hotel can be found. BTW the smell of bad service was the unusual smell that permeated the hotel, either the cleaning products or a scent that was piped in. But it always smelled like bad service to us.

Room Tip: Choose a room far away from La Rambla and on a higher floor

Finding 1898 hotel was a challenge as we rented a car and passed the hotel 5 times but I am so glad we found it. Beautiful and classy; clean and comfortable, great rooftop area where I enjoyed the cod salad with a cosmo the day we arrived--yum.
