“Beautiful and dark hotel”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

Beautiful very "aroma therapy smelling" hotel, situated very centrally (a little too centrally, maybe). Nice, clean room, although very small and dark, as the only window faced a rather dark yard. The beautiful roof garden/pool/bar makes up for this completely, though. The very friendly and polite staff combined with tapas on brasserie "Lucía" and the extremely beautiful Barcelonian architecture made our weekend in Barcelona a great experience. We might consider living in the "el born" barrio next time, but definitely a nice, luxurious stay on the "1898"

Room Tip: Be prepared to spend a good amount of money on a deluxe room, unless you like darkness....

I'm a little bit in love with Hotel 1898. It maybe had something to do with getting off the devil's flight aka RyanAir and into this serene haven of lovely smelling, kind people-adorned reception. We got a slightly discounted hotel rate via splendia and to be honest, this was a bit of a splash out - particularly once we added all the bar bill/pool nibbles into our bill BUT every moment was brilliant. The roof terrace is immense - small but perfectly formed little pool and great lounging to be had. LOVED the location just off la Rambla with easy walking distance to wherever one wanted. Staff were beyond accommodating. The room was lovely. Small but useful spa area and gym. Can't fault it!

Spent 8 nights at this fantastic hotel. The hotell is in the upper part of the prize-scale, but worth the money!

It is located close to the mainstreet La Rambla and has a fantastic atmosphere with a spacious reception/lounge area, a great roof-terrace and high quality on their rooms.

The hotel has its own spa-area which is a perfect area to relax after a busy day of sighseeing, or after a hard night of clubbing.

The rooms are spacious and modern, with large bathrooms. The staff are very friendly and service minded, and is ready to assist you with any issues you might have.

During the day, you can use the roof-terrace instead of going to the beach. Here they have a pool area and a bar that serves drinks and food.

If I where to mention two things I was not satisfied with, it would be the beds and the breakfast.

The beds are a somewhat hard, however not the the degree that it affects the quality of the sleep.

In addition, there breakfast is overprized; They charge you 24 Euros per person for the breakfast, which to me is much to expensive compared to what you could get at an resturant in Barcelona.

So in order to sum up; Great location, fantastic hotell, however prizy breakfast. Skip the breakfast, I would recomend taking a trip to the market, La Boqueria, and buy the ingredients to put together a cheap but tasty meal.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the La Rambla if you are sensitive to noice.

We booked this hotel for a 1 night stay before getting on a cruise ship and were not disappointed! The lobby is decorated beautifully and smells incredible. We received a bottle of champagne in our room upon arrival. We splurged and booked the deluxe rooms with a private terrace...SO WORTH IT! These are not small balconies. You truly have your own private terrace with a chaise lounge and table/chairs. The rooms were lovely and the hotel staff was very helpful with nearby restaurant recommendations. The rooftop is one of the highlights of this hotel. This rooftop boasts gorgeous panoramic views and has a luxurious atmosphere.

We only had one incident to complain about. We accidentally left a hanging bag in the closet. We emailed the hotel to let them know that we left something in the room and told them we would be back in Barcelona after our cruise to pick it up. When we arrived the receptionist was extremely snooty about it. She acted like it was going to be the biggest inconvenience in the world to go down to the "basement" to retrieve our lost items. She said that they ask we give them 24 hours advance notice for requests like this. Unfortunately, this was not told to us in the email. We did not appreciate the attitude we were given. It felt like since we were no longer guests at the hotel that we were just a burden to them. Other than this one isolated incident, we loved our stay here and would most likely stay here again!

Room Tip: The private terrace that comes with the deluxe room is worth every penny!

Dear Guest,
We would like apologize for the inconvenience experienced at the Front Desk regarding the collecting of your lost item and would like to explain that was not our intention to make you feel uncomfortable just because you have already checked out, since is not how we work and we definitely like to greet our guests again. :)
We kindly inform you that we are asking to all our guests to email us once again at least one day before, since we need to contact our Lost and Found Department to check in the large basement if we have the lost item and in case of positive it needs to be delivered up to the Reception in order to have it ready for the pick-up.
We inform you as well that our receptionist after talking with you has checked the emails and once she had the room number and the check- out day has immediately contacted with the Housekeeper department and gave priority on searching your lost item for have it ready on your way back from your lunch break.
We appreciated the time dedicated to share your impressions of our hotel and apologize once again for the inconveniences you may have experienced.

Looking forward to welcoming you again at the H1898.

We stayed at this fantastic hotel in the very heart of Barcelona. The old quarter was just across La Rambla. The service everywhere in the hotel was fantastic. Friendly. Very helpful. Not obsequious which can happen at these hotels. The rooms were beautifully outfitted. We were lucky enough to have rooms over La Rambla and slept with the windows open - not everyone's cup of tea but I wanted to hear the heartbeat of the city. Everything was in easy walking distance or easily accessible by the underground railway located a few minutes walk up La Rambla. I could not have asked for a better experience. The ambience of the hotel, with warm dark coloured timbers, or the lounge room with a black and white theme and old silent movies running on the big screen TV. So warm and inviting. The pricing was reasonable.

Room Tip: If you want to experience La Rambla to the full get a room with a window onto it. We loved it. The n...

Hotel 1898 must be one of the best hotels in Barcelona when you consider all aspects. Location is perfect, in the city centre, just off La Rambla, only a short stroll from Barri Gothic or Raval. The roof terrace is an oasis, and was not crowded at all. We spent several days there. Our room was quite big, comfortable and very clean. We experienced personal and very good service during our stay (one week). Checking in and out was quick, and there were very nice people in the reception.

Rooms and floors were perfect temperated.

Quality is the best word to describe the hotel. Quality all over. You need to like the style: this is not a hot, minimalistic hotel, but traditional, high quality, a bit old fashioned style. Love it - and will defenitely come back!

Room Tip: We had a room in 4th floor, facing Pintor Fortuny; quiet.

Convenient location right on Ramblas. Though next time I stay in Barcelona, I'd prefer not to be on Ramblas, as it's so so crowded. Hotel though is beautifully decorated, lobby bar is excellent, rooms are clean. Rooftop bar is awesome with great views of the city.
