“The absolutely best place to stay as a tourist in Barcelona”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

The hotel is located right on La Rambla in the end closest to Placa Catalunya, this allows for a great starting point to go anywhere in the city. The staff is very helpful and kind, and the hotel has a great over all atmosphere. Everything is kept very clean, and you can even smell the cleanliness coming in from the street. The house keeping personel is very profesional and there is absolutely nothing to complain about. I will absolutely go here again, if I am to visit Barcelona again.

Situated right on the Ramblas this hotel was originally the tabacco import building.
They have created a lovely spa in the basement and a heated pool on the roof with a bar and spectacular views over the city.
The secure underground parking is an essential in Barcelona and is charged at €23 a night.

Room Tip: Choose a superior room if your budget allows.

Best hotel in I've stayed in vs. high end places such as W or les Arts. Great location, amazing rooms, wonderful service, stunning terrace and spa. Delightful bar with well executed cocktails and a great gin menu. Full of character and not a single complaint.

Stayed 3 nights, and definitely coming back.

A nice hotel that was recommended by my colleague who stays their every time when travelling to Barcelona. We stayed in a cosy room on the 5th floor facing the courtyard. I liked the in-room lighting system when you can turn on/off desirable lamps pushing one button. The bathroom is rather small but fully equipped with amenities, slippers, bathrobes but with a horrible hair-dryer designed for people with 6 fingers.
Breakfasts were great, with Cava, jamon, excellent choice of fresh fruit, pastry, omelettes, salmon, muesli, etc -- we did not want even to look for another place in the mornings.
The SPA is good, however the steam room was very cold. The gym is small, for 3 people max.
Generally, no complaints, except for a hair-dryer and cold stream room.

We enjoyed a Silver Wedding family brief weekend break in March staying at Hotel 1898. Really classy luxury right in a central location at the top of Las Ramblas with realy helpful & welcoming staff. Hotel converted from former HQ of Phillipines Tobacco & Cigar Company, lots of dark colours & subdued lighting. Really comfortable wide beds with choice of pillows, great shower! Church bells dont start till 0800, slight rumble of metro occasionally but seems very distant.

Rooftop pool & bar with great distant views but too cool to enjoy in March!

Hotel looked after our bags securely till evening departure. Location is just a few hundred meters from Aerobus stop in Placa Catalunya, the most practical & economic way (5€ each way) to get to town.

We'd strongly recommend it, a bit pricier than our normal choice but it was for a special weekend & they laid on complementary Cava Reserva for us which was a really nice touch!

Stayed at Hotel 1898 in February when my wife and I were in Barcelona to see Barca play Seville in La Liga. Could not fault it in any way. Staff were very friendly and helpful and all facilities were excellent. Just a bit chilly to try out the rooftop pool! Will definitely stay here on any future visit to Barcelona.

The hotel is a lovely boutique-ish bolthole, smack bang in the middle of everything in bustling Barcelona.

Location:
Just off the Ramblas, a stone's throw from the fantastic Boqueria market it is perfectly located to walk or take public transport all over the city. The Raval district is a bit like Shoreditch or a Soho of 20 years ago if you're a Londoner - some really hipsterish cool bars and restaurants, independent and established shops, apartments and always an exciting, bustling and slightly grimy hubbub at its heart.

Hotel:
The hotel has a great little spa which is a perfect place to relax after a day's sightseeing. The basement pool is relaxing - with a vaulted brick ceiling and soft lighting, it feels cosy. There are various water jet things around the pool to massage away the aches and pains. There is a sauna and a steam room as well as a little gym with weights and a running machine etc. They also offer massages (pricey but good), and there is a rooftop pool too with a terrace bar with great views.

We opted for their basic style room but were upgraded upon check-in. The rooms are stylish and very comfortable - lovely beds and linens, big fluffy bathrobes, slippers, blackout curtains, good storage, nice Etro toiletries (they also provide toothbrushes and shaving kit on top of the usuals you'd expect - no conditioner though), a big flatscreen TV (not much choice of channels in English) and a radio.

Minor gripes:
The only things for us missing were an iPod dock (we read somewhere there was a USB but we couldn't find it on the TV or radio) and a decent hairdryer The hairdryer in the bathroom is one of those inexplicably heavy shiny chrome ones with a switch you have to hold down to use, not very powerful at all and attached to a curly wire. If you have weak hands, or if you have longish hair which you blowdry, pack your dryer from home.

We didn't eat breakfast at the hotel - 25Euro each for breakfast seems a bit steep for us when there are amazing places to eat nearby. If you pop around the corner behind the hotel, past Bar Lobo (which has a decent brekfast selection and a delicious fresh squeezed orange juice) there is a beautiful quaint little deli/cafe established for nearly 150 years called Granja Vinader which is utterly charming with heavy marble tables, catalan tiled floor, and staffed by stern old men in white starched shirts, which sells churros, great coffees, hot chocolates, pastries and toasted sandwiches etc. Save your money for an amazing lunch or dinner in one of the cities fabulous eateries, and don't bother with the hotel breakfast!

Room Tip: The cheapest rooms facing the central courtyard are probably the quietest, but the rooms on the outs...
