We stayed here for just 1 night as a stop over when we travelled from London St Pancras to Valencia via train. We were celebrating my 50th birthday & hence wanted something special, Hotel 1898 is! We travelled via the overnight sleeper train from Paris, so arrived at the hotel at 10.30am. My partner had emailed ahead to say that we would be arriving early. Upon arrival our room was ready & waiting for us! We stayed in a delux room on the 5th floor with huge terrace, massive bed, sumptuous bathroom....everything we could wish for. Late afternoon the hotel delivered a bottle of sparkling wine with Happy birthday message to our room. Service exception & it's right in the middle of La Rambla but very quiet. Thank you Hotel 1898

H1898 is a gorgeous property run by a multilingual, multifaceted staff. The hotel is perfectly placed on Las Ramblas between the Square and the market. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and quiet.

Where do I Begin?
1. How long should you vacation in Barca? We spent six days. That should be your minimum stay. We saw one Flamenco show (will discuss in detail), took the full red and blue bus tours throughout the city (a must), saw a football match and sampled a new restaurant twice a day. We got massages at the Hotel on day four. We took that one day off to rest our feet and our minds. That was a perfect day to get massages and enjoy the waterfalls in the pool/jacuzzi. Then we headed to the bar and pool on the roof (could've moved my bed there it was so picturesque).

2. Book a Flamenco show. It was emotional and entertaining. The food was wonderful and the show was impressive. The show we attended was in a museum style village that boasted a variety of stores. We purchased most of our gifts there, including some fig balsamic sauce that I still can't believe. Should've bought more. I purchased the package thru Expedia and knew that I'd receive crappy seats having packaged my deal. I was pleasantly surprised to be right up front to the stage. It's a great show.

3. Go see a futbol match. In America, we call it soccer an it's not even the fifth most popular sport. In Barca, it's the only show in town and it was incredible. We happened to book tix through Expedia and this time we were in the nose bleeds. But like most stadiums the fans were more spirited up top than anywhere else. I can't describe the feeling of camaraderie I felt other than to say it rivaled a game at Fenway and the feeling in the Black Hole in Oakland. It was a long walk from the train station ( take the train early and often) but we took our time and had fun.

4. The food is amazing. We ate in the Hotel restaurant, ate in every square we could find. We got off the beaten path and asked the locals and Hotel staff for their favorites. We found four gems and two wonderful late night spots. I cant remember all of the names. Just get off of Las Ramblas ( it's overpriced). The streets adjacent to Las Ramblas and Hotel 1898 have great food and unbelievable atmosphere.

5. Take the Red and Blue bus tours early. About 1/4 mile from the Hotel. Take one or both early and you'll learn the city so fast. La Sagrada Familia can only be described in pictures. The details in that cathedral are so plentiful. The Olympic village is a day trip. We passed on that to stroll the museum twice. They happened to be filming a movie and we were mesmerized. We barely visited the waterfront. It's another day or two to shop, relax and play. The shopping district. The art. There's a lot to see. Its like trying to see Dubai in a week. Go in the spring or summer and sit up top. Bring your camera and mark up your map.

6. Las Ramblas has everything and H 1898 is right in the middle. During the day, it is a playground for families. Food, ice cream, shopping, paella, sangria, the market (about 100 individuals food stores with everything you can imagine). During the night, it becomes a playground for adults. We hit a local nightclub with the help of one of our waiters. It was a night of dancing to 60's music. Motown to the Beach Boys. And they knew every word. No Americans to be found. It was very surreal. The spoke in Catalan and sang in English. There are plenty of clubs and plenty of trouble to be found. Be safe.

7. Learn to speak the language. If only a few words. Barcelona is in Spain but really it's Catalonia and the locals speak Catalan. A properly placed Moltes gracias goes a long way.

8. Enjoy this Hotel! From the moment you arrive the staff is inviting and personal. They spoke English, Spanish, French and of course Catalan. When I asked to change my room on day one to get a better view of Las Ramblas, they gladly obliged, even after the kind warning about increased noise. We never even noticed more noise and we were there over a Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. Choose a high floor.

The shower controls are not intuitive but can be learned with a little patience. Those robes are so comfy. Shower shoes not sized for guys who are big but my wife loved them. I'm 6'3". They covered three toes.

The breakfast was expensive but worth it at least once. The diversity of food is unique in a boutique hotel. Dinner was a treat. Again, it's worth it at least once.

Get a massage. We rescheduled at least twice and they never complained. The ladies were so pleasant and the massage was quality. Enjoy the sauna, waterfalls and whirlpool before and after. I stay in my robe that entire day.

Get to the roof! Walk the whole roof before you settle into one space. There are couches and cubby holes everywhere. We brought paella and Sangria and just enjoyed ourselves up there. The pool was heated and the people were friendly.

9. So I guess I'm saying, in conclusion, Go in the spring or summer, stay seven days, choose this Hotel and have a blast!!!!!!

Room Tip: Read the entire article. Look at a few reviews. Trust your instincts. You know yourself best.

The rooms were spacious, beautiful and comfortable. The lobby was classy. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to help. We liked all of the staff, but, in particular, Victor, Pablo and Lara were amazing with their assistance and suggestions. The location of the hotel was absolutely perfect. Without us asking, we were upgraded to a superior room. My only complaint would be a minor one - the workout area and spa pool did not open until 8 AM. The hotel was definitely a highlight of our experience in Barcelona.

Room Tip: Make certain to email the staff ahead of trip to inquire about restaurants, sightseeing and services...

My wife surprised me with a city break to Barcelona and booked us into this lovely hotel.

The location is very central and only a short walk to the market, the Catalonya Plaza, the Gothic quarter, the shops etc etc. Plus there are several Metro stations close by for the other attractions around the city

The modern style room was very spacious and comfortable. We were on the 4th floor facing the Rambla. Yes, it is a busy road so you cannot expect it to be silent, but it was fine.

The other facilities in the hotel are great, such as the roof terrace, the basement spa, which is perfect to relax in after a long day walking around the city.
The breakfast options are great too with a wide selection of delicious treats. Perfect before a busy day exploring the sites

And finally, the staff are all very accommodating and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay

We had a corner room (more expensive) - it was a very comfortable room - quite modern - spacious. The bathroom was good except the shower was in the bathtub (a problem for older people when not in a separate space). Because the room was a corner room, there were maybe 4 steps up to get into it - also a problem for older people with mobility problems. However, once in the room, it was great - quiet, good bed, very attractive. The bathroom was also very good except for the combined bath - shower. The diningroom was good for breakfast but not as good for other meals - not a big menu. The hotel had free internet and perhaps 6 computers but there wasn't a person sitting in the room (a library - basically books in Spanish) who could help if a problem arose. The location was excellent and there were a number of other restaurants near by.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel 1898 for 5 nights late Sept. The location was perfect - right on La Rambla. The staff were all very friendly and eager to help us with restaurant recommendations and reservations, as well as giving us directions for the train station when we headed out of Barcelona for the day. Such a beautiful lobby, and bar on the main floor. The rooftop pool and lounge area was also very nice with an incredible view of the city. Our room was very clean but a bit small and dark with no light coming in at all. We had no view as it faced the back of the hotel I think. We couldn't see! I would request a nicer room next time. The bed was comfortable. We loved the hotel and would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view and balcony.

My husband and I just hopped off a cruise ship and spent 3 restful and exciting days in Barcelona at Hotel 1898! We lounged on the rooftop every day and ate the AMAZING tapas (I miss the prawns...yum). It was close to the subway, incredible restaurants, Starbucks, shopping, etc. The hotel had great service, our room was cozy and our deck was huge, although we spent most of our time lounging on the roof. We will definitely be back.
