The room was cool, spacious and immaculate - so was the bathroom. The roof pool, terrace and bar have the most amazing views over Barcelona, night and day. A lovely, classy hotel right on La Ramblas. We couldnt have asked for anything better - I would recommend to anyone!!!

Stayed here and really enjoyed it.

Likes - really close to La Rambla but quiet and relaxing. Roof top patio rocked and was a great way to end the day. Can't say enough about the rooftop!!Staff was great and very helpful.
Dislikes - Main Restaurant was very stuffy and not really somewhere we decided to try out. Would have been nice to have a good home base restaurant.

Overall a good spot if you want to be near everything to walk and also close to a metro stop. We would stay here again.

We arrived in Barcelona via overnight train from Paris - so a 9am arrival. Despite the very early arrival, and although our "superior" room was not yet available (nor did we expect it to be at that time), the hotel staff were very pleasant and tagged our numerous bags, advising us to check back with them around 1pm, to see if we could book in early. The foyer is magnificent - lots of dark woods, black leather Chesterfield couches, opulence personified.

Situated right on the main pedestrian boulevard of La Rambla, we were right in the centre of things, yet we had no issue with any noise. The Mercat La Bouqueria (a most wonderful food market with freshly squeezed juices and fruit that looked and tasted as if it was picked that day), was within a 100 metro walk from the front door - off La Rambla. One could immerse oneself there for hours as there was tapas, fruit, and an assortment of food there to keep all intrigued.

The hotel has a complementary business centre with two Apple and two Windows based computes available for guests to use in an opulent setting on the 1st floor. There is a magnificent terrace tapas bar which overlooks the city and is a wonderful setting to view the lights of the city on cushions and wooden decking. Our room had two very comfortable single beds pushed together in the European style, with a pillow selection we did not have to avail ourselves of.

We used the spa and sauna which is on the basement level - a very relaxing experience complete with dry and steam sauna's, pool with inbuilt chairs in the spa and fountains in a similar atmosphere to a Arabian styled hamman. My friend had a very relaxing one hour foot and leg massage for 85 Euros, which compared to Paris, was reasonable, given the luxurious surrounds.

The room had a fridge, deep bath, toilet, bidet, comfortable chair and large LED TV affixed to e wall. The Service staff are exemplary in their duties - nothing was too much trouble. The toiletries we high quality and refilled very quickly, there is a turn down service (complementary) which is a nice touch complete with foot mat on each sides of the beds and chocolates.

We called for ice - brought up immediately. There is an in-room safe and great lighting.

My only small fault in an otherwise unblemished record, is that there was no iron and board available for guests to use - security was cited as the reason, and although I understand the potential risk of fire, for a hotel of such quality to not offer this was surprising. Despite this, we would both stay here agin in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Book a superior room or better

Location in center of tourist hub - on the main blvd of old Barcelona; while this is great for exploring this part of the city on foot, it is also in the middle of a very hectic part of town. Our windows (superior room, #225) faced the back of the hotel - a small side street but one that had 3 cafes/tapas bars, and, as the nights are long in Barcelona, there were street musicians playing outside our windows past midnight. I imagine the rooms facing the inner courtyard are quiet - these are mostly standard double rooms.

Overall, the comfort of the room was more than adequate, although not the best I've experienced (I travel abroad several times per year), especially at this price ($445/night). The room was normal size by european standards. The bathroom / shower good but not amazing.

The decor of the hotel, the lobby setup, etc is the part I enjoyed most. Spacious, well appointed, well designed.

The roof terrace - a very nice touch. Beautiful views of the city, very pleasant to relax and unwind, fantastic outdoor furniture - couches, chaises. However - the restraurant on the terrace - another story. We had tapas & drinks one early evening - ok, not great. On the last morning we had breakfast on the terrace - quite awful. The bread wasn't good, the fruits were tasteless, the fresh-squeezed orange juice wasn't good, and to top - the omelet was oily and cold!! A bad breakfast in any situation, but at the price of 25euro/person I think this is unforgivable. Of note, there is an alternate breakfast option at the hotel - on the 1st floor at 21euro/person; we did not try so I cannot comment. In general I rarely go out of the hotel for breakfast because I don't like looking for something in the morning, but in this case I felt that the prices for bfast were unreasonable.

My experience with the front-dest staff was neurtal. They were neither exceptionally helpful, nor unprofessional. A restaurant recommended by the font desk (El Pintor, in the jewish quarter) was not good. A tapas place they suggested - a typical tourist hub with good but mediocre tapas.

We also stayed at hotel Catalonia Catedral in Barcelona - in the Barri Gotic on a pedestrian street. This was substantially better priced, and while there is a difference in hotel class, in this case this difference did not justify the significant difference in price. Catalonia Catedral was very comfortable, quiet, with larger rooms and a significantly more modern/c

Can't say enough good things about this hotel - staff are fantastic, rooms are clean and modern, room service is quick and hot (although menu isn't that extensive), the roof top pool is amazing, the bar is great, the spa is relaxing and the massages are exceptional (i am very hard to please on this front, so really was good!).

Would stay there again in a heartbeat. Why stay anywhere else?

My husband & I spent 3 nights here before a cruise. I picked the hotel based on Trip Advisor's reviews. We were not disappointed. After checking the hotel website, I had a few questions before reserving a room and sent several emails. Each one was answered in less than 24 hrs.

We arrived before noon via taxi & were greeted curbside. Even though we arrived before the normal check in time, Monika was able to see if our room was ready, it was & then checked us in. Also she was excellent providing us with hotel & Barcelona info as well as info concerning pickpockets & on how to be careful.

Our room was on the 3rd floor on the side street. The pros:
1. Very clean with a wonderful bathroom
2. The pillow menu. I tried the Memorex pillow & liked it.
3. We enjoyed the steam room & sauna & loved the therapy pool on the lower floor.
4. Afternoon tea was relaxing.
5. Had a special rate that included breakfast buffet. The buffet had a large amount of choices with American & European items. Delicious fresh fruit.
6. Early check in
7. Great location
8. Front desk sells discount tickets for the hop on/ hop off bus. When we purchased our tickets we received a booklet with discounts to other sites.
9. Helpful staff who speak good English.

The cons:
1. The tub is very slippery & we were not given a tub mat. I should have asked if one could be provided, but did not.
2. The fitness center did not open in the early hours of the morning. My husband likes to work out around 6-7am & it was closed then.

We stayed 9 days in Hotel 1898, and we were pleased that we have selected not only the best hotel in Las Ramblas but also the most centralized hotel in Barcelona since the hotel is located in the upper Las Ramblas.

We have selected Superior Room with the view of Las Ramblas. The room is magnificent, and they offer different types of pillows to choose from. The free wi-fi in the room is a major plus since most hotels in Barcelona will require a payment of 20 to 30 Euros per day for internet connection. We were able to have a good night sleep even though our room is located in the front of Las Ramblas.

We highly recommend anyone to get the breakfast buffet with their room rate. The food is plentiful and have a wide range of variety. The business center can be used free of charge if you need to access your e-mails or print any document.

One thing that stands the best about Hotel 1898 is the type of service their employees provides to their customers. They are all courteous and efficient.
