We had read on the website that they would be having a music and light display on the Thursday of Easter week. Many others though the the same thing. The fountains actually shut down and we wondered if this might be the precursor to the 'show'...but 7pm came and went. So, we left. But, we returned the next evening and the fountains were alive with colour. The music could have been a bit louder as it was difficult to hear it (could have been where we were standing). It's not something that I would make a point of seeing on each trip to Barcelona, but would definitely recommend seeing the display of lights and colour if it's your first time to the city. Note: very easy to get to via metro.
