In Whit Stillman's excellent movie "Barcelona," the American hamburger serves as a metaphor for cultural misunderstandings between Catalonians and Americans. Apparently, back when he lived in Barcelona it wasn't possible to find good burgers here; consequently, Catalans who tried the mediocre burgers available to them associated America's obsession with burgers as an example of our cultural deficiencies.
Well, there are good burgers available in Barcelona now, and in my opinion the best can be found right here. I also have eaten at the top two Trip Advisor rated burger joints in the city, and I think you get at least as good a burger and a better and more authentic American diner experience at Bernie's Diner.
There are a number of varieties of burgers available, including a chicken burger and a veggie burger, as well as 5 different types of fries. All of the other typical diner food also is on the menu, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Trust me, I will. I will be in Barcelona for another 2 1/2 months.
Within the last two months, the diner has changed both its ownership and its name. Based on the reviews of the prior restaurant at this location, those changes have resulted in a significant increase in the quality of the food. So, if you tried the old diner which was here and were disappointed, give the new one a try. You won't be disappointed.
I have had two of the desserts on the menu, and both were very good. Bernie's also offers not only the typical beer and wine choices readily available in the City, but daquiris, piña coladas, and other popular blender drinks. However, unless you like salt on the rim of drinks other than margaritas, be sure to ask them to leave the salt off.
Conveniently located between Born and Bari Gotica, with its large number of large screen televisions, Bernie's Diner also offers a great alternative to the proliferating Irish pubs as a place to watch soccer. I recommend it highly.
