“Excellent surprise, but somewhat at a price :-)”
Reviewed August 21, 2014

During our recent trip to Barcelona we happened to go have two times lunch at this place. The first time we ended up there by accident. Arriving at our nearby hotel already well into the afternoon we were looking for a place nearby to have a quick lunch. So we walked a short hundred steps to Suculent. The name by itself is already inviting. It's a tiny restaurant but luckily you can sit outside on the sidewalk or even on the square.
We ordered the PIGLET WITH MELON, and the GRILLED SQUID WITH FRESH FOIE. Wow, what a surprise it was. Very tasty, but also very original combinations - new tastes!
The second day we wanted to try another place but as it was closed we returned to Suculent, as it seemed a sure value. And yes it was. This time we first ordered the CALF TAIL AND MUSHROOM CROQUETTES - something you should absolutely try out! Followed by GRILLED OCTOPUS WITH CHICKPEAS AND BLACK SAUSAGE and COD FISH WITH SNAILS. Everything very original and absolutely tasty combinations.
As a side remark though, especially that you're not at the most upscale part of Barcelona, it comes at a price that is definitely above average for Spanish taverns. Especially when they also charge 2 euro for a piece of bread, not that it ruins the bank, but good food comes at a price here. Nevertheless, highly recommended!!

“Great food, bad service”
Reviewed August 20, 2014

The food was succulent indeed (although a bit expensive given the size of the portions). Our waiter was slow, not very friendly, and it was surprisingly complicated to get an answer to basic questions like: what's in the tasting menu? But anyway, the food was so good that definitively makes up for the bad service! Try the croquettes, clearly the best I've had in Barcelona (and I have tried a lot of places).

“If American, You Won't Recognize anything on the Menu, but Go Anyway!”
Reviewed August 16, 2014

This restaurant was in the area of Barcelona where we were staying. We noticed nightly the number of mostly well dressed people who dined here typically did not look like tourist and decided to give it a try. Reading the menu made us want to get up and leave -- very unusual selections i.e. calf tail dish. If you are in the mood for expanding your culinary experiences, this is the place for you! Fortunately, our waiter said, "If you don't mind, trust me, and I will order for you this evening." It truly was the very best dining experience we had in Barcelona in the 10 days we were there -- & we even tried the calf tail dish...without knowing it. Outstanding! There is both indoor and outside dining available with the outdoor in a plaza type setting. Service is attentive & polite and they are also open for lunch. It's located in a very quaint part of the city -- Rambla Raval which is a very culturally diverse area. Would recommend reservations for dinner.

“Three visits in three days.”
Reviewed August 16, 2014

Perfect place. Nice and casual ambiance, friendly staff and a very talented chef who sends out outstanding dishes of great simplicity and playfulness, based on fresh, high-quality ingredients. Even their simplest dishes, such as their home pickled olives, oysters with vinaigrettes or pickled anchovies stand out. Simple "comfort food" such as lamb-filled pasta, croquettes with ragu of calf tails and mushrooms, pickled mackerel or braised octopus with chickpeas are executed perfectly. And their more "high-end" dishes they shine as well: Roasted bone marrow with tartar is truly fantastic, so is also the must-have starter of shrimp ceviche, sweet and chunky raw shrimps served with a fantastic citrus vinaigrette and avocado. Lobster with trumpet of death mushrooms is a beautiful serving and the accompanying tartar made of the lobster claw with lime and coriander, served on crispy chicken skin, may be the best I have eaten in Barcelona. Add great desserts, a great house cava and other house wines, a few but standout sherries, and you have a restaurant which is so good that I had to visit three times on a three-day visit.

“Fantastic Meal”
Reviewed August 15, 2014

Suculent was recommended to us by a local Chef (bcnKitchen - another recommendation).

It was a terrific meal with some inventive local cuisine. We had the small tasting menu which was more than enough for my wife and I. The calf and mushroom croquette was amazing. The ox tongue was so tender and delicious. I know many readers will be scared away with some items on the menu, but suspend your preconceptions and enjoy the flavour and execution.

Charming rustic decor and lovely neighbourhood too.
