Owner description: Cooking classes, market tours and customised adventures that will open more than your eyes to the gastronomic heart of the city that Anthony Bourdain of No Reservations described as “the most exciting place to eat in the Western world.” A fun, relaxed and memorable experience for groups of friends, families or singles, as well as company team building days.Engage all your senses as you tour Barcelona’s best markets including the world-renowned La Boqueria and haggle with the Catalan stallholders for the freshest seasonal vegetables from the fields of Andalucia, the creamiest Spanish cheeses, seafood direct from the Mediterranean, Spain’s famous Jamón Ibérico, oranges from Sevilla, and almonds from the hills of Catalonia. Then learn how to transform these ingredients into delicious modern and traditional Spanish dishes - personally created by your chef. And finally, enjoy the fruits of your hard work over Cava – don't dare call it Spanish champagne, a selection of Spain’s best wines such as Tempranillo, Garancha, Syrah and Mazuelo, and Catalan Vichy - the world’s #1 mineral water. Come on a Barcelona Culinary Adventures and see why Papa Serra called this place home.

“An Authentic Catalan Experience...”
Reviewed November 26, 2012

We very much enjoyed our morning with Chef Joel... an educational trip to La Boqueria followed by an interactive cooking experience was a great way to absorb ourselves in the culture of Barcelona. Chef Joel is very knowledgeable and a wonderful teacher... his laid back style allowed for a great hands-on experience (with gentle reminders when our creative tendencies led us astray). The food and wine were amazing, the atmosphere was fantastic and we made some great friends along the way. Highly recommend this for anyone traveling to Barcelona!

“Absolutely wonderful and yummy of course!”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

My husband and I visited Barcelona a few weeks ago and decided to join Papa Serra's cooking class.

First of all, the booking process was easy. Chef Joel responded to our emails in a timely manner which I think it's very important especially when you are also planning 5 millions other travel-related activities. The payment process was easy too since we just used PayPal.

The cooking class started with a market tour guided by Joel. We met Joel at 9am in the front entrance of the La Boqueria Market and he greeted us with a glass of chilled cava! Yup, a glass of cava! Who said you can only drink orange juice in the morning? =P As we were walking through the market, Joel told us about history of the market and explained some of the main ingredients used in Catalan cuisine. Everything in the market is soooo fresh! I just wish we have something like that here in Los Angeles. After buying the ingredients needed for the cooking class, we headed to Joel's apartment located near the market.

Before we started cooking, we tasted some spanish iberian ham (Jamon Iberico), cheese and olives we bought at the market. I don't really like eating olives but I found those olives to be quite yummy! The Jamon Iberico was beyond tasty!!! To top it off, we also got to try a variety of Spanish wine.

Now, it's time to cook! There were 8 of us in the group and we were divided into teams of 2. Each team was assigned a dish or two (we made the ajo blanco and the baked apple dessert). The instructions were clear and easy to follow. Joel did an amazing job choosing the menu:

- Spanish olives, cheese and jamon
- Ajo blanco
- Pa amb tomaquet with allioli
- Pintxo of wild mushrooms in fino w/ manchego
- Endive filled with esquaizada and orange
- Lentils w/ chorizo crust and salsa verde
- Spiced chicken w/ romesco
- Baked apples filled with lemon almond cream
- Moscatel and Aromes de Montserrat

All the dishes came out very delicious (thanks to Joel's supervision)! We had a wonderful time cooking and enjoying the yummy food. The moscatel and Armoes de Montserrat are to die for! I totally regret not bringing a bottle or two back home =(

Overall, it was a very wonderful and fun culinary experience. We enjoyed the entire experience, particularly spending time with Chef Joel and the rest of the group. If you are going to visit Barcelona, please consider joining this cooking class! It was one of the highlights of our trip and I am sure you will feel the same too!

Joel: Thanks again and we wish you the best of luck! =)

“An excellent experience!!!!”

Creating a meal with Joel was a marvelous experinence! My husband and I went to Barcelona on our honeymoon. Andrew and I are both foodies, and he booked the cooking class as a gift for both of us-- we had an amazing time!!! Joel met us at the Boqueria with a bottle of Cava, told us about the history of the market, and led us on a shopping adventure! Then we went back to his place to cook for the whole morning. Joel is experienced, skilled, friendly, knowledgeable, relaxed, and fun to shop and cook with. Our classmates were fun too-- the conversation was almost as good as the food. We have already used some of Joel's recipe's cooking for my father in law and step daughter, and we look forward to using the same recipes and more from the same class on Christmas Eve! FANTASTIC food. Here's to a fun, creative, and talented chef!!!

“A Must do in Barcelona”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

Our trip started at the market, where Joel found the ingredients he needed. Then we all walked over to the apartment where we all cooked a 12 course lunch. The recipes were explained to us and we paired of and got started. Joel is a very knowledgeable cook and fun to work with. He helps you when you need help and just visits with everyone. The lunch was delicious along with lots of local wines as well as after lunch wines! Highly recommend going to the Papa Serra site before you leave home to make sure you are included in the class! He sends the recipes home with you via your email, perfect. I can still enjoy all the delicious tastes of Barcelona!

“bon profit”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

Our experience with the Barcelona Cooking Adventures was an absolute highlight of our recent three week trip around Europe.

The guided tour of the market was an experience in itself, made even more special with a few glasses of cava. Joel completely based the menu on our personal food preferences, whilst opening up our eyes to a few delicacies neither my partner or I had sampled.

The class itself was very hands on, with instruction offered not only in making the dishes but on general cooking and knife techniques.

To finish off the class we sat down to a lovely meal with our host, accompanied by many a glass of Spanish wine. We were also emailed a personal cookbook full of the recipes we created in class, accompanied by photos of both ourselves cooking the dishes and the final products we created. A nice take home touch to go with the experience.

Money well spent for 5 hours’ worth of culinary delights. I would highly recommend to fellow travellers.

Thanks Joel!
