“Nice hotel with a great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2012 via mobile

We stayed one week and enjoyed our visit. Hotel is nice and you can walk to almost every city location in Barcelona. Great selection of restaurants and bars in the neighborhood. Standard is nice and all staff are friendly and can speak english.

Well what a great hotel

Having read some of the reviews a mixed bag really

recetion on arrival were friedly prompt and had all the information you needed for a quick check in

The room faced out onto the main street on the 2nd floor very clean and compact and super bathroom shower the beds and towels changed every day if you so wish what a pleasure staying there very gay friendly and straight friendly all in all a hotel within easy reach of bars and resturants etc

Did not rate the roof terrace much in the day but hey not our bag really a bit expensive drink wise too
although a very nice touch and nice later on in the evening where it was rocking DJ and a nice crowd of people the place to be seen

Breakfast was top notch and always presented well and the service was very good

so Well done to all you made our stay super

on point would of been nice to be able to make a coffee or tea first thing in the morning but alas no tea tray etc not the end of the world though

Room Tip: street view rooms better

We booked a year in advance and got a great deal on a 7 night stay at the Axel hotel Barcelona. On arrival we were greeted by the friendly and smiling reception staff and offered an upgrade for a nominal charge which we agreed to. Thankfully we did, as obviously our rooms would have been much smaller with no view to speak of, and no balcony. Our friends had arrived earlier and also took up the offer of upgrading but they also received free wi-fi ….When we questioned this for ourselves the reception staff member was quite put out and had obviously forgotten that this was part of the deal. Anyway it got settled, however the free wi-fi only lasted 2 days and they had to keep re-setting it each time with new passwords ???. The rooms were very nice and comfortable and there were free t-shirts from Emporio Armani on the beds as a promotion, which just happened to fit perfectly. nice touch. The shower was great and was in full view of the room…the only thing was that the room only had huge dark curtains and no net curtains, therefore if you had a shower the neighbours would be able to see you, if they were looking of course, unless you closed the heavy dark curtains. The roof top pool was fantastic and a great place to relax and listen to the music, although the drinks were a tad expensive. On occasion they ran out of pool towels and when you asked for one they simply said they had run out?? Not a good answer to a paying guest. The breakfast was excellent and the staffs regularly replenished things and were very friendly. I was looking forward to using the gym but was advised by reception that there would be an extra charge? I was not prepared to pay for this as a guest of the hotel, it should have been free. The hotel was very well situated with plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs within easy walking distance, and not too far from the shopping areas. Overall I would recommend the Axel and hope one day that we will return.

I first visited in 2011 and was pleased to be back. The hotel remains its clean and welcoming self. It is possible to get an inclusive deal for room and breakfast.
The comfortable cocktail bar remains under used
The breakfast is great and the tables kept topped up all morning.
There is luggage storeage for early arrivals and late flights etc.
Subway and bus routes are close.
And the hotel rooms are supplied with three door signs - the usual 'make up room', 'let me rest' plus an unusual third for the more adventurous 'please do disturb'

Room Tip: Didn't use the spa. This is Barcelona so there is street noise, rooms at the rear may be quiete...

After reading mixed reviews on Trip Advisor, I did wonder what the Axel Hotel would actually be like when I arrived. However, I need not have worried, it was a nice, albeit quite pricey hotel. The location is very good, close to all the main things that I wanted to see. It was also easy to find from train station, or where the bus drops you off.
I did arrived slightly early, hoping to get checked in, but this was not to be. I was told that I had to wait until 2 o clock. This wasn't a major issue as the guy behind the reception desk was pleasant enough, and took my bag from me, so I could go for a walk and come back. It turns out that he was the more pleasant of the two receptionists that I encountered during my stay. The female that eventually checked me in, was rather miserable, despite my efforts to be chatty with her!
The room itself was nice. Lovely and clean, a large comfy bed, a nice bathroom, and a decent shower. I did notice that some of the paper was peeling off the wall, and there was no plug in the sink, but hey ho.. no major drama! The TV worked well, some english channels, the air con was good too. There was a safe in the room, which was free, The wifi also worked fine for me, and was also free,
The large glass doors that opened on to the street side, were well insulated, and certainly kept a lot of the traffic noice out.
I used the spa once, it was ok. I didnt mind paying the additional 7 euros. It was very quiet down there, the changing rooms were clean enough,, i've seen worse in my local gym!
The rooftop bar was also nice. I did not go up there in the evening, so cannot comment on how busy it was. it was nice to just sit up there in the afternoon, admire the views and read a book.
All in all, a good stay. No real issues, would not hesitate to stay here again.
Although I paid around 200 pounds for 2 nights, I guess this in on par with many Central London hotels, so cannot complain really!

The hotel is located is a nice central area with lots of good places to eat and it is very close proximity to local transit and Las Ramblas. The hotel room we had was very nice, however one of the couples we were traveling with had a room in great need of renovation so I would recommend seeing the room first before you unpack or asking if the room is a renovated one. The roof top pool area is nice but the pool is quite small. I wished the hotel had a friendlier reception area where you could meet up and hang out. There is a bar with the hotel on the ground level, but it seldom seemed used or open. The roof top was a more popular destination, but mostly involved sitting on lounge chairs. We did use the the spa for massage services and they massage was interesting but not very good for the price. Not to American "spa" quality for sure.

I think our stay was nice enough but if we had to stay again in Barcelona I think we would choose another place with better amenities. The gay aspect is nice but not really relevant for us. Everywhere we go is gay.

If you want to treat yourself this is the place to be.
Easy to find, central and not far from all the attractions in the city.
The staff is very friendly and helpful.
We did not have a breakfast but we went for a dinner in the hotel;
The restaurant is modern and comfortable, the food is good, for those who will not eat much is ideal, the main course is very small and if you want to fill your belly you have to order another dish again.
Fortunately around the hotel are many bars and restaurants where you can test Catalan cuisine at a reasonable price.
