We visited the zoo with a group of school kids aged 15 and 16.

The zoo wasn't very big at all but there were some animals that the kids had never seen in real life before such as the hippos and giraffes.

The zoo was well kept and tidy but some of the enclosures were tiny and the smell was a little overbearing.

The facilities for food were not very good and we were limited to hot dogs. The other restaurant was closed but that might have been because we visited in March.

We didn't go to the live shows as there were literally hundreds of pre-school children about.

Don't plan on spending a whole day there!!

Thank Jane D

Right in the center of Barcelona, in the Parc de la Ciutadella, you enter a nice area, with botanical world-wide plants and then you see the entrance to the zoo. One may think, as we did, that is a tiny little zoo, like two birds and a lion. Wrong! We enter the zoo at 10am and stayed there until 6pm. And we didn't see all of it! There are a lot of animals, exotic birds, etc. But there are also educational shows, free of charge, with dolphin shows every day. Worth every penny of your money!

Zoo is nice and interesting, but it is smaller then we supposed. Dolphins and sealions shows were really amazing and you can have a lot of fun there. Time in zoo was really very relaxing and another plus is that zoo is in the park de la Ciutadela so you can easily spend whole day in this area (park + zoo)

Nice grounds and lots of different animals. More spaniards then you get at other attractions, so feel less touristy. It's much bigger than it looks from the outside and we regret not having shopped for a picnic en route through El Born as lots of places to st and enjoy one.

I've read almost all the reviews here on Tripadvisor, before actually going to the Zoo, great, average and poor combined. The one thing I found in common, and I quite agree, is that many find the enclosures too small. It's true; we counted 12 buffulos confined to a dirty grass-less space of about 2500 sq meters; it's tiny by any standards. The giraffes have not enough room to move, neither do the elephants. The sight of a lonely rhino turning back and forth saddened us, he looked lonely and sad. Amongst the zoos I've visited, it's one of the worst. Basel, Rabat and San Diego zoos are light years away in terms of enclosure size. The dolphin show was ok, if one speaks Spanish, the sitting arena is huge compared -again- to the tiny pool the dolphins perform in. A pony ride is very expensive - €3.80 for a tiny two circles, and you have to hold your child's pony for the entire ride. We didn't see any tigers, but were lucky with the lions. They roared the entire time we stood by their enclosure...Were they hungry? Upset? Have never seen animals so stressed in a zoo...The highlight of the day in Barcelona Zoo was the kids' playground - it's spacious and well designed, and very entertaining for the kids (only from 6 to 12 yo). Otherwise, the whole zoo experience left us feeling sorry for the poor animals, and a bit short on cash - €20/adult, €12/child.
