I wanted so much more...and all the descriptions were in Spanish and had to get a leaflet to read the English which you get tired of very fast. I wish I spent that time visiting Picaso Museum or somewhere else I didn't have enough time for.

If you want to know more about the Roman origins of the city then you will enjoy this well laid-out museum. We spent a good few hours there and found wandering over the ancient walls and seeing the areas that were once dedicated to fish processing and laundryparticluarly interesting.

We went to this museum after a local friend recommended we do so. This unassuming museum covers the story of how the city was founded with excellent explanations. An audio guide is highly recommended to learn all there is to see. The entrance to this museum was not crowded at all,

Do you know anything about the Catalans? This is the best place to learn about them. The beauty, their passion for life, their language and why they are passionate about Barcelona.

MUHBA PLACA DEL REI gives visitors the opportunity to wander around amid ruins of roman and early christian origin, located under the present square.

Three positive notes :

We were amazed at the scale and quality of the archeological digs performed here. Honor and praise are due to the scientist who managed to uncover what activities took place on this exact spot almost two thousand years ago.

Roman remains include part of the city wall, a laundry shop, a fish factory and a wine factory. Early Christian remains include a church, a porticoed passage and the Episcopal palace.

The museum has a modern, fresh feel and the ruins have clearly been incorporated with the greatest respect.

Visitors can move at their own pace with the help of an excellent English audioguide.

Two points of criticism nevertheless :

The introductory movie can be skipped as it focuses on the demographic evolution of Barcelona without providing historical background. We found it rather dull.

Because ruins of various eras are partly overlapping it can be hard to visualize the layout of a former building or to pinpoint what exactly the audioguide is referring to. Therefore the museum could do with more reconstruction drawings, perhaps distinguishing eras by using different colors.

People with a particular interest in history should schedule half a day for an in depth visit.
