“Great museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2012

I'm much more interested in the romans than the church and they got half a roman town under there. It is fscinating to see the history of Barcelona and instantly gave me a much better apprication of where I was. Basically all of the gothic and Las Ramblas is built on top of a roman city, you can go in the museum and see the things they were working on 2000 years ago exactly where you are standing, surreal. I wished the audio tour was longer as the english translation pamphlets can be hard to follow. Its not Rome but still a great museum if you dont know anything about barcelona. Go there first

“City of Barcelona Museum Worth It for the Archeological Ruins”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012

This museum was fascinating and well worth a visit as there are lots of layers of archaeological ruins that you can view...from prehistoric times thru Roman to medieval. You actually walk on a walkway thru the many excavated layers. There are even vestiges of old hebrew writing on some of the reused building stones.

Also explore the courtyard next to the museum. In the evenings, there is a nice stairway to sit on and watch the street performers and enjoy the ambiance.

“Roman ruins under the Cathedral”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2012

This is an excellent self-guided tour that should take about an hour using the audio guide. It has a little about the early days but it's mostly about life during Roman times and shows clearly how people lived and worked.

“Great roman remains”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2012

The rest of the museum is not that great, but the visit to the Roman ruins is well worth the admission price. Such a lot of activity in such a small area of the Roman city - what must the rest have been like.

The garum factory and the wine cellar were the highlights - comparable with anything Pompeii and Herculaneum have to offer.

We expected to be in and out within an hour but I think it was 2-3 hours of fascinating study.
