“Great Experience at Princess Sofia Hotel”
Reviewed June 18, 2009

Has a great service and the lobby was more than spacious.
The rooms were very cozy and confortable.
The only problem was at the check out cause we had many people at the same time and nobody offer and alternative receptionist-
But the overall experience was perfect.

We have stayed in this hotel for the past four years because of its location and the room size. The hotel has not been rehabilitated in years--stains on the carpet, damage to the furniture, gouges in the bathroom door, repairs to the bathroom marble--you get the picture. It does have double pane windows, but the heating/air conditioning system has a thermostat that basically lets you have it on or off--bad control of the room temperature--and the fan speed is also inadequate. You hear doors banging in the hall. Some reasonable fraction of the plugs in our room did not work. Promised newspaper was delivered sporadically.

The big change from past years is the deteriorating service--worse food in the club lounge, fewer, less trained people--no porter on arrival, for instance, no replacement of wash cloths or shampoo--unless requested--hard to get the operator to answer the phone, etc.

We purchased a Club package, slightly more expensive than standard rooms but worth every penny. Staff were very helpful and the facilities were excellent. Would gladly return again to hotel. 100yards to metro line L3 which dropped us in the middle of Barcelona within minutes.

I stayed here for a conference and felt that the hotel was tired and shabby. The service was very slow, the staff seemed uninterested in customer service. I would not recommend it to friends or colleagues. On my last morning I had breakfast in my room and had to send the tea cup back as it was filthy. The mini bar had mould growing in it.

The only positive about this hotel is the gym with relatively new equipment, and the clean, brightly lit common areas. The rooms are a different story. No water pressure ,or hot water, to speak of, a hole in the bathroom ceiling, dirty walls, dingy accomodations and beds that feel like concrete slabs. The housekeeping staff also decided to throw away clearly not-disposable items (like non-disposable contact lenses/case). Not really sure why this place is considered in the new "financial and shopping district" - didn't see any sign of retail in an entire week. We were clearly in what seemed to be the Detroit suburbs.

The lobby and exterior of this hotel were great. The staff was generally helpful, although we did have issues with service when requesting things from our room. We ordered glasses and towels and had to call again because not one brought anything. We also had issues with their internet, but they took the charges off of our bill, so I was satisfied with that.
The rooms were in need of an update/renovation and had peeling wallpaper, bumpy carpet and strange vents which wafted cigarette smoke into our bathroom, even though our whole floor was smoke free.
It was on the green line so taking the metro into town was not difficult. The stop is about a block and a half away. There is also a Starbucks on the way to the metro, which was nice.
They allowed us to leave our car in the parking in front of the hotel instead of parking in the garage for 20 euro/day.
The hotel restaurant was unimpressive, and expensive. We had the buffet one evening, and it was 30 euros per person, which I found steep since the food was not great.
The concierge was helpful and able to point us toward nice restaurants.
There was an ATM in the lobby, which was helpful as it is unsafe to go to some ATMs on the streets.

  • Liked — The parking, the concierge, the lobby
  • Disliked — Restaurant, the rooms, charged for internet

We arrived to the hotel by Taxi from the airport and were charged 50 Euro!! Be careful of this as it should only cost around 20 Euro.
Hotel staff were pleasant and helpful. Rooms were clean however not as "Fancy" as we were expecting them to be for a 5* Hotel. We were charged 12 Euro per day each everytime we wanted to use the leisure facilities, this was not explained to us before we arrived we thought it was included in the price. I wouldnt recommend having a drink in the hotel again it is ver expensive there are one or two bars just across the way and an irish bar across from the Hilton hotel which is a 10 min walk.
The hotel is located in a lovely area a 5 minute walk from Barcelona FC stadium and close to 2 shopping centres. It was also conveient to the Metro line which is brilliant and very easy to use taking you to Las Ramblas in 15 mins. (You can walk but it does take about 45 mins) Be aware the shops in Barcelona close on a Sunday which was a shame especially at this time of year when we were trying to stock up on our Christmas shopping.
