Stayed here for a week and thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The street is extremely noisy, but a slate of entertainment by itself. Just make sure you have earplugs....you will definitely need them, and enjoy the cacophony of noise and action from the pedestrian street below (we were on the second floor) til 4 in the morning! We had 2 small balconies to view out of, and the compact room was well suited for a stay. This is a european style room, with very compact bathroom, but thoroughly comfortable. Breakfast 'round the corner, for coffee and croissants or buns...up the street if Starbucks is your a.m. fix. Tons of tapa bars and restaurants short strolls away. Free hi-speed internet in our room, as well as a cozy lounge with a monitor and computer.
CLEAN as a whistle! Pay attention to where you get out at Placa Catalunya...bus, train or whatever, Hosteria is easy to find once you figure out your orientation. Would stay here again in a heartbeat, highly recommended, just bring earplugs.

Room Tip: Take street side for interest/excitment..... rear for quiet, although we didn't see or stay in a...

For anyone who wants to experience old Barlcelona, I would highly recommend a stay at Hosgeria Grau. A bit tricky to find, unless your taxi driver knows where it is, but worth the search! Not for those who want to be pampered, but for a clean bed, friendly service, and being right off the hub of everything, it can't be beat! We will never stay anywhere else when in Barcelona.

We stayed here for a week with our 18month old baby we stayed in a family apartment overlooking the streets leading onto the rambles. This was perfect for us as we were so close to all the amenities but far enough from too much noise. Lovely views onto the city too...we would defenatly return to this hostal."

Four of us stayed at Hosteria Grau in August. We were staying in a condo further down Las Ramblas (near Liceu) and then we moved to the Family Room (2 bedrooms, one of which had two single beds for the guys) at Hosteria Grau. It was a much better location, and we just loved it. There was no TV in the place, but we didn't care. We had breakfasts in the myriads of shops downstairs. Staff are friendly. There are so many handy shops around, and Las Ramblas is a couple of blocks away, as is Plata Catalunya, the subway station, and airport bus. It's a great base for walking around Barcelona. Good deal, too. Would go again.

I picked this hotel based on really good reviews and recommendations from a variety of sources. I wouldn't say I was shocked and appalled by the reality, but I was just a touch disappointed.

First, the pros. Yes, this place is absolutely fantastically located in El Raval, about two short blocks from La Rambla. This in itself has many pros - close to food, entertainment (people watching!), stores (you name it, it's sold on La Rambla) and public transportation (bus and metro). Surprisingly, given the proximity to La Rambla, you really don't get a lot of street noise. Well, we didn't, but our room was facing the back street...

Also - clean. Clean, clean, clean. Plus, the room and overall hotel are tidy and cute. We didn't use the air conditioning but it was available, and the ceiling fan provided plenty of relief. We got the room with the en suite bathroom, I would definitely recommend going this route if you can.

"BUT"...I was definitely expecting...more?...based on the reviews. The room (while clean) was very spartan. No alarm clock, the tiny table in our room had one chair (for two people??), no iron, no blow dryer, very small as to be useless packets of soap and shampoo, and as others have pointed out - very tiny rolls of toilet paper. Luckily, the housekeeping closet was right outside of our door, so we augmented toilet roll as needed.

Also, there was no breakfast included - so not a true BnB, as I'd seen it advertised. And we were charged 3 euro a day for the safe. It was nice to have, I've just never had it separated out as a line item on the bill.

So, you could definitely do worse, and I would not dissuade you from staying here. The two things it has going for it (location and cleanliness) are pretty persuasive. Just be aware that it can be a little basic.

Room Tip: Try to get en suite bathroom.

Hosteria Grau is located within a couple blocks of the metro and RENFE access, good breakfast places (Buenas Migas), the major department store El Corte Inglés, next door to an ATM machine and Las Ramblas (a long pedestrian promenade). It is within walking distance of a colorful public market, La Boquería. The room we stayed in was on the second floor and facing the pedestrian street of Ramelleres. Though pedestrian, the street's noise level was high and to sleep we had to close the glass balcony doors. The air conditioner was very effective and quiet which was good because it was above 90 degrees F. while we were there. The bedroom and bathroom were small but clean and functional. Beds were comfortable. The staff were very accommodating. The price was reasonable. Given the alternatives, I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Take a look at rooms that do not face a street - might be quieter than the rooms that face Ramellere...
