Description: In the heart of the Gothic neighbourhood on la Plaça Real, the Mariscco Reial restaurant is located in a Renaissance-style building dating back to 1850. This historic site has housed a diverse range of activity, such as the Gran Cafe Espanyol, and later the Pedagogic Museum of Natural Sciences and taxidermy workshop. Respecting the original architecture, Mariscco Reial offers the chance to dine inside a wide, open space, with high ceilings and eclectic scenery, or alternatively, outdoors under the Plaça Reial porticoes and the lamp posts designed by Gaudi. Mariscco Reial is open all-year-round, and boasts a cosmopolitan atmosphere, with a case of seafood and fish showcasing the delicacies available. Serving Mediterranean cuisine, Mariscco Reial serves high quality, fresh produce, which is prepared to the guest's taste. Specialities include rice with lobster sauce and prawn soup, or the climate-controlled cellar showcases a wide selection of wine.

Had dinner here with my partner and 7 month old. Chose to eat from the tapas menu and seleted octopus, goose barnacles, potato wedges, razor fish, cuttlefish, sea snails, seafood soup and oysters. Quite a few of these were things we had never tried, they were all excellent and fresh (you can see the fish counter if you go inside). Our son had some of the soup and wedges and both were perfectly suitable for him. Also had a pudding each and a bottle of rioja, all again were excellent. Best seafood tapas restuarant we have found so far. Service was also great. Would definitley recommend.

Thank Russell M

We didn't order the lobster paella because of mixed reviews here, and focused on seafood. Steamed cod, grilled sea bass, tuna wedges, and octopus were very fresh and the seasoning was just enough to add taste without masking the natural flavors. Portions are on the small side but the quality wins. We will be back!

We pre-booked a standard €50 'group' menu as a large party. When we got to the restaurant a table was set up inside for us and there we had to sit - the only people stuck inside the empty interior while the rest of the diners joined the life of the Placa Reiall outside. The seafood was very high quality and lots of it - almost too much - though nothing very exciting had been done to it. Service, starting with that contra-temps about the table, was faintly hostile. Not a such a great experience and a real pity. But we were a large party in unusual circumstances - don't let this put you off tapas at a table in the square which may be a very different experience.

We had the lobster paella which we rate as one of the best dishes we have tasted in our 6 days in Barcelona. It may not be for everybody though. If you like fresh lobster bisque, then you will love it as that is what it tastes like. A very fresh lobster, cooked in lobster bisque with lots of liquid sauce to go with the paella - simply fantastic in taste and freshness. The portion of lobster provided was also very decent.

We had no problems with service but that may be because we started eating very early for Spanish standards. They get quite crowded after 8 pm and the staff may get quite stretched by then.

Lovely place to go to and recommended

We first stumbled across this restaurant on our first day in Barcelona. The setting is very pleasant, looking out onto the Plaza Reial, with a good atmosphere. The menu is varied and you can pretty much eat whatever you fancy. It was so good the first time round at lunchtime that we went back there in the evening for dinner.

For lunchtime we took a selection of 4 starters + 1 main (we had missed the timeslot for tapas). All the seafood was cooked from fresh and everything tasted just as it should. Service was very prompt and friendly.

In the evening, having gone round many restaurants and found most of them either unappealing or tourist traps, we went back to Mariscco and this selected the Lobster Paella for 2, a real treat if you don't mind getting your hands dirty with that lobster. The cuttlefish base of the paella was very nice and I would certainly recommend it to anyone who likes seafood paella but wants something slightly different. Service in the evening was slightly slower than at lunchtime mainly because the place was heaving with people.

I think this is one of the best restaurants in the Gothic district. You know you will get fresh and well cooked seafood. Prices are very reasonable. I recommend.
